How could they NOT put in Tom Bombadil? He was one of the most magical and entertaining characters in the whole book. He rode on a horse called Fuzzy Lumpkin! Doesn't get much better than that! I think that they should have had more of the songs and poetry in the movies but that's just me. As for comparing Lord of the Rings to other movies, you can't really compare it to Harry Potter or Star Wars. Whole different places all together.
