What is the song called that the wood elves sing?   Sunday, January 12, 2003 (2:06 p.m.)

When I watched the special extended edition of the Fellowship of the Ring, I loved the song that the wood elves sing when they are going to the Grey Havens. What is that called? Is that on a soundtrack? Because I love it and I would love to know where I can hear it if its on a cd. Also, are there lyrics to it? I'm guessing its in elvish, but I still want to know the lyrics. If anyone can help me, thank you.

They may or may not have been wood elves; Frodo forgot his dichotomous key when he left Bag End. In the book, they are Exilic Noldor; might as well be exiles in the movie, too.

no, it's not, most definitely not. They're singing something about "the world", that's the only part I could understand (in Quenya, of course).

In the Book, Frodo meet high elves of the house of Finrod that are traveling to Imladris (Rivindell) to collect their reamaining kin. I took a close look at the elves in the movie, and they are a smalll group beaking banners of blue and silver, the colors of the house of Finglofin. I could understand most of the song, they are singing a mournful ballad of leaving middle earth to go to Aman (the Undying Lands)

The song is called "Elbereth Gilthoniel"
and I just happen to have the words in Quenya (speech of the high elves) and English.

Snow-white! Snow-white! O Lady clear!
O Queen beyond the Western Seas!
O Light to us that wander here
Amid the world of woven trees!

Gilthoniel! O Elbereth!
Clear are thy eyes and bright thy breath!
Snow-white! Snow-white! We sing to thee
in a far land beyond the Sea.

O stars that in the Sunless Year
with shining hand by her were sown,
in windy fields now bright and clear
we see your silver blossom blown!

O Elbereth! Gilthoniel!
We still remember, we who dwell
In this far land beneath the trees,
Thy starlight on the Western Seas.

A Elbereth Gilthoniel,
silivren penna míriel
o menel aglar elenath!
Na-chaered palan-díriel
o galadhremmin ennorath,
Fanuilos, le linnathon
nef aear, si nef aearon!

A Elbereth Gilthoniel!
O menel palan-díriel
le nallon sí di'nguruthos!
A tiro nin, Fanuilos!

A! Elbereth Gilthoniel!
Silivren penna míriel
o menel aglar elenath!
We still remember, we who dwell
in this far land beneath the trees,
Thy starlight on the Western Seas.

The elves were indeed Noldor(AKA High elves)soo when Frodo says they were Wood elves in the movie, he is wrong.

No, I don't think this is the song that the "wood elves" (according to the movie) are singing. I listened to sample that appears on "Lord of the Rings: At Dawn in Rivendell" called "Elven Hymn to Elbereth Gilthoniel" and it's clearly not the same one that is in that scene. The search continues...

I think that it is Gandalf's Lament. Because if you listen, they ask Legolas about what they are singing. and he says "Gandalf's Lament" (sp??)

Hey Everyone,

I was searching for that beautiful song, and i came across some lyrics that match perfectly. So here they are for everyone! I hope this helps!

O Queen Beyond the Western Seas (song of the Wood Elves)

A Bereth thar Ennui Aeair!
Calad ammen i reniar
Mi 'aladhremmin ennorath.
A Elbereth Gilthoniel
I chin a thûl lín míriel...

Ah Bare-ehth thar ehn-noo-ee eye-are
Kahl-ahd ahm-men ee rehn-ee-are
Mee ahl-ahth-rehm-meen ehn-nore-ahth
Ah Ell-bare-ehth geel-tho-nee-el
ee heen ah thool leen mere-ee-ell

O Queen beyond the Western Seas!
O light to us that wander
Amid the tree-woven lands of Middle-earth.
O Elbereth Star-kindler
Your eyes and breath [are] like shining jewels...

Hey Jess,

The song is called 'O Elbereth Gilthoniel', you can find it at audiblebeauty.net/rings/fellowship/index.htm, scroll down a little and click on "Woodelves" (Extended Version). It will come up on your windows media player and start playing. If you want to put it on to your cd burner, just right click and "save target as", then put it on your desktop, and drag it over to your burner.

I think that it is GandalF's Lament (sp?) Because during their singing, Legolas says that it is...;)

I do not know the name or the words of the "Wood Elves" song, but a fellow fan told me that later in the year there will be 9 soundtrack cds from the extended LOTR movies. "Wood Elves" IMO is the most heart wrenching piece of music I have ever heard....I can't wait to get the set of 9 cds.

The song is not sung by Wood Elves, it is sung by High Elves on their way to the Gray Havens to depart Middle-Earth forever. Wood Elves never met Elbereth Gilthoniel, Elbereth Star-Kindler, otherwise known as Varda Elentari, but the High Elves have. This song to her is sung by them as they recall the memory of their most revered Vala, the one whose stars they first saw lighting the skies as they awoke by the waters of Cuivienen.

It is known by two names, the name of the poem it is fashioned after- A Elebereth Gilthoniel by J.R.R. Tolkien, but more formally as The Passing of the Elves composed by Howard Shore. It can be found on YouTube in several covers, but I've linked what I think is the original below.

THE POEM

A Elbereth Gilthoniel
(O Elbereth Starkindler,)
silivren penna míriel
(white-glittering, slanting down sparkling like a jewel,)
o menel aglar elenath!
(the glory of the starry host!)
Na-chaered palan-díriel
(Having gazed far away)
o galadhremmin ennorath,
(from the tree-woven lands of Middle-earth,)
Fanuilos, le linnathon
(to thee, Everwhite, I will sing,)
nef aear, sí nef aearon!
(on this side of the Sea, here on this side of the Ocean!)

A Elbereth Gilthoniel
(O Elbereth Starkindler,)
o menel palan-díriel,
(from heaven gazing afar,)
le nallon sí di'nguruthos!
(to thee I cry now beneath the shadow of death!)
A tiro nin, Fanuilos!
(O look towards me, Everwhite!)

_________________________________________________________________________________

THE SONG

Fanuilos heryn aglar
Rîn athar annún-aearath,
Calad ammen i reniar
Mi 'aladhremmin ennorath!

A Elbereth Gilthoniel
I chîn a thûl lin míriel
Fanuilos le linnathon
Ne ndor haer thar i aearon.

A elin na gaim eglerib
Ned în ben-anor trerennin
Si silivrin ne pherth 'waewib
Cenim lyth thílyn thuiennin.

A Elbereth Gilthoniel
Men echenim sí derthiel
Ne chaered hen nu 'aladhath
Ngilith or annún-aearath.
