Haha I so agree. How can you be so judgemental of what a composer uses. You have to listen to why he uses it and how it ends up coming to your ears. Film composers are stressed with time and they find what is right because its how they want to convey their message.
Williams decided that Harry Potter needed a frighteningly layered score especially noted in Hedwig's Theme which surprisingly got him on Minnesota Public Radio's weekend rotation (yah betcha). Still the reason he used it is because the movie seemed to go right with a frenetic score. Harry Potter did at times lack in scenic excitement without a pulsing Christmas tune set to it. How easily recnogizable was Harry Potter music that I guess it blends perfectly well into to anything on classical radio.
Shore decided that Lord of the Rings needed a frighteningly ambient and simplistic score concentrating on tonal quality. The movie is so picturesque to the point where the score probably helped slow your eyes down to watch it. The feel of the music is much more ethnic--in a way where you feel like its outworldly and unrecognizable. That sounds like film music to me.
