Yes, you're quite right that Sam has the edge over Frodo, but I wouldn't put that down to greater intelligence as such. Consider his pathetic excuse for 'dropping eaves' or his stunning revelation 'I take one more step, it would be the farthest away from home I've ever been'. He doesn't act like a complete idiot but that's more because he's not quite bright enough to think to act anything other than normal. So ironically he ends up looking less stupid than Frodo as a result of being more stupid. If you see what I mean.

And I might just take this opportunity to point out once again that Aragorn is far and away the most desireable member of the Fellowship. Followed by Frodo, though he's quite a way behind.
