well... i must say you do have a point, however if you DID read the book, you would notice that it isn't exactly the same as the movie... so the writers and directors did have alot to do with the characters personality slightly changing, ever so slightly... to make them blend even more, and to entertain the viewers even more. When you said "he may have made fantastic decisions with the cast and really done the best job anyone can do, but he DIDN'T blend the characters" that is really not possible that he DIDN'T blend the characters... because he chose them, he knew they would fit perfectly together, just how it is in Tolkien's book, so basically he knew what he was doing, he knew he had to get cast members who blend together, and his plan worked like a charm. If you misunderstood me, that's all i ment. And i agree Billy Boyd is a talented actor.
