Comments about the soundtrack for The Matrix (Don Davis)

The quality comparison is what strikes me most between these albums. Rel and Rev are the same high quality other than Rev boosts the bass more and increases reverb. But the first Matrix album is so different. Who knew US recording ability would change so much in 4 years. Of course M1 wasn't given the same budget you feel the quality is lacking a lot even though the orchestra is able to have its moments of overtop bombast. The score is great, you can hear what hes doing but it doesn't come out as it did in the latter movies. Plus the orchestra seems to suffer from their own tonality issues notably the brass cue we all come to love are more hesitant and at times ring sharp. The horns also are muffled in recording. The string section is sparse and a little edgy resulting in the light staccatto motif becoming thin in the upper register. I'm sure this all contributes to the ear-churning effect but in reality I think Davis' original Matrix score would've been really spectacular in terms of experience. But in Reloaded he was able to revisit a lot of the primary "themes" so I guess you have to be a trained ear to catch them. Except I think the Anderson track when he gets the bug into him stands alone throughout the series. Nothing like crazy jazz rhythms in a jumble.
