While I'm thankful for both Sony releases, neither of which is due all of the hype and rage they have bee gathering.

No, it isn't Sony's fault. It's really because John Williams effort for The Phantom Menace falls far short of his previous works.

Unfortunately, the fans have come to expect maybe more than they should from Sony, as RCA raised the measuring stick to stratospheric levels with the Special Edition CDs.

The true menace may be the fans themselves...

Yes it does fall short, but not worth the the hype? While not as good as the first 3 TPM is still a great score and a expanded release is worth the hype.
I think it's obviousily the best score of 99 with only Angela's Ashes and The Red Violin close.

I do not enjoy the soundtrack. Why waste my money on the new when when I have the old one which sounds the same.

Because they're not the same. The ultimate edition, although choppy (blame the nature of tyhe film, not williams) is better than the original because it has all the best cues, incl.

Quigon and Maul meet
Escape from Naboo
The Tide Turns
Fighting the Guards
