dear dude,
for ppl that have never sung opera before, they did pretty darn good. and about the age, ppl in those years get married at 17 to men who are ten or more years their senior. and the phantom is supposed to be as old as madame giry, which is why he looks older. in the original book by gaston leroux, the phantom is beyond age. in andrew lloyd's he could possibly be even 60.
so, yes, it is ew, but that's the way it was back then. in the medieval era, girls got married at the age of 14 O_o. you would be considered an old spinster if you were 18-19 and unmarried back then.
