Neither of them created the story or the characters. Gaston Leroux did. This movie destroys enough of his story for him to be spinning in his grave by now, and yes, an informed opinion from someone who knows and loves the show and novel has rather greater weight than the opinion of someone who doesn't, or a pair of sell-outs like JS and ALW.
