Rossum and Butler are AWFUL   Tuesday, January 4, 2005 (2:37 p.m.)

You know I always thought they could auto-correct pitches and lengthen sung notes, etc.
The funny thing is, I'm sure everything is pitch corrected, shifted, filled in, brightened, sustained, and just about anything else you can do, and it SUCKS!!!! If you're going to dub Minnie Driver, why not the rest of the cast?
I think it was when Rossum sings, "imagine me trying to hard to put you from my mind" and blatantly cracks on "my" that I turned off this wretched CD. alas, it only gets worse. I would have to say all of the leads lack the lung power required of the score.
Ummmm, I'm a classically trained vocalist, and let me tell you , none of these folks have ever sung opera. I doubt they could get through an entire musical either. With so many promising broadway actors who have both film and theater roles, you would think they could take the time to find actors who were a decent fit.

By the way, did Emmy Rossum's age bother anyone else? I mean come on, Raoul looked like he was thirty, the Phantom , 35 or older, and there's this like 16 year old girl. Last time I heard that was five to ten. Ewww....

dear dude,

for ppl that have never sung opera before, they did pretty darn good. and about the age, ppl in those years get married at 17 to men who are ten or more years their senior. and the phantom is supposed to be as old as madame giry, which is why he looks older. in the original book by gaston leroux, the phantom is beyond age. in andrew lloyd's he could possibly be even 60.
so, yes, it is ew, but that's the way it was back then. in the medieval era, girls got married at the age of 14 O_o. you would be considered an old spinster if you were 18-19 and unmarried back then.

what is it with all these people who say they sing opera. if they are so good than why didn't they audition for the movie. i doubt any of them would have done and better and maybe they are a bit jealous. to say that rossum and butler were awful i just don't get it. i have seen the broadway play and although it was good the movie out shines it 100 times over. so if you don't like the movie get over it and don't buy the soundtrack just to rip it apart. better yet just crawl back in your hole...PL

Finally, someone with some sense! I said almost the same thing and I was called a juvenile fangirl. The movie does outshine the play and anyone who doesn't realize that has no sense!

I don't know what your deal is! If they're so bad and you're so good, why are they making magnificant movies and millions of dollars while you're not? Answer that!

At least she liked the movie! I honestly don't see how you or anyone else couldn't LOVE the movie! I mean, people need to give this movie the credit that it deserves, not all of this criticism!

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is about time someone said that! I was wincing during Music of the NIght. Gerald Butler can act, but he should STAY AWAY FROM MUSICALS!!!!!!! (at least ones that are as good as Phantom of the Opera!) In All I Ask of You Raul starts to push and shout when he sings along with Christine. I am also a classicaly trained vocalist and I was veeeeeeeery disappointed in the singing! Plenty of ppl can act AND sing, why nit get them!

OK. First, you may be a "classically trained vocalist," but the ONLY one of the lead roles who is NOT classically trained would be Gerard Butler. Emmy Rossum has been singing with the Metropolitan Opera in New York since she was 7. SEVEN. Have you performed with them? Also, Patrick Wilson (Raoul) is one of the leading tenors on Broadway. So I'm PRETTY SURE that he could make it through an entire musical.
And, if you read the novel, Christine is SUPPOSED to be 16. AND the Phantom is her tutor since she was young; at least, he has been "haunting" her dreams since she was 7. Raoul is also notably older, about 21; perhaps this is just MY opinion, but Raoul didn't look THAT old.
So, take that.

Did it ever occur to you that the movie is NOT an opera, it is a musical????

I guess they should have chosen you the one with the iron lungs to do the movie?

Who cares if they were trained in opera. If you love opera go watch the stage show. And leave the movie to untrained opera singers like the rest of us.

ok well if u r so mad about their performance tell them and stop ruining their images. cuz those of us who love em get wicked pissed and its not helping u. as other people hav said butler has admitted to not being a professional singer and was surprised wen casted. also, hav u ever realized that maybe theyre not trying to sing opera style? i mean obviously christine is when she is performing but when not on stage they are singing to portray a certain character, a certain mood and emotion. butler's voice and style of singing fits the darkness of the phantom and the lightness of rossum's voice fits her innocent character.
