Who do you believe: Filmtracks' 5000-word review? or the juvenile fangirls below? |

I hope that people who find this Filmtracks review notice that Clemmensen and other people who find the new Phantom disappointing are articulating themselves very well. There are many very intelligent arguments being presented against the merits of the new Phantom recording.
Then there are the fangirls, who seem to cause most of the favorable comments about the new Phantom here, and their English is poor, their opinions are badly uninformed, and they all sound like they're too young to know what the hell they are talking about. I think many of them are the same uneducated two or three girls posting over and over again without the guts to use their real name.
Filmtracks' ratings don't lie. And Phantom of the Opera is getting the pounding it deserves in the polls.

I totally agree with you. I have looked at other message boards and it seems like anyone who has bad opinion about Gerard Butler is berated for their opinion. The simple fact is that he does not have the kind of voice to bring this role to life. I would like to see him sing compared to any other trained Broadway singer and see who comes out ahead. Good looks can only get you so far. I think that if ALW and JS wanted to catch a teenage audience thay suceeded, but what about those of us who can actually hear when something is not sung correctly. Thank you for your courage!!

I say your nuts. Gerard Butler is a great singer same with Emmy Rossum. Compared to Crawford Butler seems to know the character better. Emmy Rossum got critics raving since she did so well. Theres proof to that too, she won best actress in the critics choice awards so you the are you to say that this is bad? This film was really great!

I was only commenting on Mr. Beaulieu's opinion. I think that you should read his comments and learn how to spell and use punctuation and grammer before you you go around insulting people. I did not say that Mr. Butler could not sing and I did not once mention Michael Crawford or Emmy Rossum.

GOOD LORD!!! You need to go the doctor for DEMENTIA. Butler cannot sing. Crawford can. That's obvious. If Butler can sing, then so can I...so can anybody...ANYBODY can yell.

What do you know? Crawford doesn't have emotion in his voice at all-he obviously didn't know the character. Butler is so much better than that nancy boy Crawford and I sure there are people somewhere (not necessarily here) thatagree with me. Crawford sounds like a girl. That is so not right.

I agree with you. Butler has so much more emotion in his voice. Sure, he's not the best trained, but he's still magnificant!

Ok, first of all, I'm not the same girl. Second of all, I don't have to give any reason for my liking the movie and its soundtrack. No one is going to change my opinion and I'm not going to try and change theirs. By the way, I'm not a desperate fangirl. I'm just someone with some sense when it comes to music and REAL talent!

O.K., I was just trying to help your situation because your presentaion is immature. And defending somthing without absolutely no vaild support, reason and Childish statements like the one above (I'm just someone with some sense
when it comes to music and REAL talent!) is a sign of a fangirl(boy).
I'm not trying to change your opinion of this soundtrack or movie, I just can't do that! But I just wanted to know your reasons why you don't like it and help you not look like a irrational little girl that no one takes seriously which right now you do. No harm intended. Sorry about identifing you as a same person with an alias, that was immature of me.
Have a nice day,
Chris

Wow, at least you admit that you were immature and your mistake. I like that. There are so many rude people out there that think they are right and the other is wrong. I also see that there are people who don't make such a big deal about it because it's all opinions. Like them, I agree that people will have different opinions and that we should respect that because there is no right or wrong in something like this.
I've noticed how so many people are bashing "fan girls" because they are "young", "only like the movie because of the hunky phantom", and "are immature." Someone explain to me what a "fan girl" is because all I see are FANS of the movie/book/play who are just GIRLS. Nothing is wrong about what they think because it's all OPINIONS. Any mature person would see that. Plus, anyone consider that there are boys that like the movie, too?
I also see how people respond to those who don't like the movie. They seem as harsh, too, and also can be insulting. That isn't..nice...and it shows how immature they are, too.
Using curse words won't help you prove your point, Chris is right. I love the movie, and I love the play as well as the original book. They all made me cry. In the movie, though, I think they could have done better with the lighting, but that is only my opinion.

gee, you seem to know about the whole typing a new name to post. how do we know you didn't use different names on here to talk all u want? exactly. you don't know. well there is the saying "takes one to know one."
and she doesnt have to prove herself to you. yeah, im a proud fangirl of the play and movie. and u know, there are some men out there that do like the movie, and it's not because of gerard butler. so stop being prejudice and stop immediately thinking that just because we're young women, we like the movie because of gerard butler who alot of girls think is hot (and i proudly agree with them as well). it's the music that touches us and makes us love it so much. and i speak for both play and movie.

I beg your pardon darling, I happen to be a 'young woman' too, as well as a rather irate phan. The fact that Webber selected the Phantom with looks as the priority instead of vocals shows his commitment to the movie. So yes, we all love the music, which is why we are tortured when this, version, is the one that is going to be preserved through time.
The loss of a better execution of the show is it's downfall. Attracting the teen market isn't going to hold up for long. That's the difference between trends and true value.

I'll have you know that A.L.W. didn't just pay attention to his looks. In an interview he said that he wanted the Phantom to have a natural roughness in his voice, which Butler did, and some people actually LIKE IT! Just because you think that the movie is torture doesn't mean that everyone does. Speak for yourself!

Pardon? Girl? Would you call him 'girl' during his entrance in Angel of Music? While singing 'in all your fantasies..'? while mocking the managers in 'Notes'? In Music of the Night, with its cresendos, legatos and all? In PONR? Would you call him girl when he harshly punctuated his anger in 'Down once more'?
The booming 'You try my patience, make your choice'?
I'll grant you, the man looks nothing like the character when he's not playing the part, sounds nothing like him too. Doesn't that show you what good acting skills he has then? To be able to become the Phantom, not just play him while angrily yelling into the recording microphone?
The Phantom has more shades to him than anger I'll grant you, he's a rather mausing chap too. Why didn't Butler portray that?

Why don't you 'yell' the songs and see if anyone would buy your record. And if ALW would sign you on to sing his Music of the Night?

Hey, listen, to say that Butler seems to know the Phantom better than Crawford would be, imho, nuts. The portrayal Crawford (or any other broadway singer who played Erik) put across was of a sensitive, tortured, perhaps slightly demented middle-aged plus plus man who fell in love with his idea of what beauty and music should be.
Butler came across as... the Vicomte with a bad case of acne.
And swearing really doesn't help you, you do realise that.
I'm not saying the movie doesn't deserve to be credited as a movie (any more than those fall-flat-on-your-face sequals out there). I think what those not in favour of Butler's singing are trying to put across is basically this: Sir Webber made an awful choise of cast.
Since when was 'sexy' defined by a person's physique anyway? How shallow has the community become?

look, a**hole, who gives a s*** about the whole punctuation and spelling, as long as their opinion and thoughts get through the world. and just because they're young sure as hell doesnt mean they dont know what they are talking about. and just as there might be girls reposting positive comments towards the mvoie and using different names, there is a possibility that there's an a** out there reposting their negative opinion towards the movie, too.
film tracks ratings don't lie, ur damn right, but they are only opinions, and everyone has different opinions, so there is no such thing as right or wrong. and just because your older (u seem to be) doesn't make you any right.
i loved the movie and im a proud fifteen year old fan of both play and movie and i know what the hell im saying. i completely respect all those people's comments and opinions, but i detest yours because it's just plain insulting. so, old or not, maybe you should think of what you're going to say before you come in here thinking you know what the hell you are saying.
and if there's someone out there that want to tell me how "right"/"wrong" (notice how i put quotations) i am, just email me. esp u curtis if you ever read this letter.

God, I have never agreed with someone more! It's about time someone tells off that Curtis dude. Your comments are the ones that I enjoy reading the most! Why does it matter what age these "fangirls" are? I'm a "fangirl" who's not that old, and yet, I think I'm being way more mature than Curtis with my comments. A bunch of these girls have excellent comments and people like Curtis need to get over the fact that not everyone is going to agree with them and the world doesn't revolve around them!

What good are you doing? All you're trying to do is put down the people who have good opinions about the movie. What's the point? Let people have their own opinions! If they like the movie, fine. If they don't, fine. Personally, I thought the movie was fantastic and because I just said that, I'm probably going to be called a juvenile fangirl. Who cares? I'm not going to change my opinion, but I'm not going to go around insulting everybody who doesn't like it. You should learn from that!

And not all of us Phantom fans love the movie. Indeed, many of us hate it, and find this review very perceptive (and no, we are not all Crawford fans).
The movie lacks all levels of depth which the stage show gives us, it entirely changes the characters, it is "Phantom Lite" made for an audience who require a "young and sexy" cast, and everything reduced to the level of a soap opera.

I'm 57, not what you would call a "fangirl" and I loved the movie and the soundtrack. I've seen all the movies, back to the original with Lon Chaney and I have to say that this one is the best. Of course the stage was better, but what stage play isn't better than the movie. See it for what it is, a movie.

Listen I saw the movie and i think it was great. I thought Gerard Butler did a great Job. Sure he is not a pro at singing, Nicole Kidman could not sing either but Mulan Rouge was still a good movie. You have to give people credit for trying and doing their best, and thats probably half of what you do CB. Can you sing? could you go and sing the role of the Phantom? and i dont want to here that crap about No i cant sing but i can do a better job the Butler. and your opinion is not the right and only opinion that should be heard. everyone has onne and if you dont like what they have to say then big deal becaue not everyone is ranting and reving over how your opionion is so right. so since i read your opionion you are going to read mine. I loved the movie and the sound track. just becaue its the same as the original big flipping deal all movies get different responces, not everyone is going to be happy with the product so leave the people who did like the movie a lone stop insulting them for what they like just because you didnt like it. you cant always compare things because that just ruins everything. so next time you see a remake of a movie watch it with an open mind instead of going to the movie already saying you are going to hate it because its not the original. The pople in the movie worked really hard for what they did. and unless you want people to start putting you down for something you have worked really hard to do i woul dkeep my mouth shut and just accept the fact that it was not the original it was not going ever be like the original and move on
