I'd seen the film a couple of times, and I thought the score sounded pretty good really. I read the reviews on this site that had gone before and bore them in mind and now I have had a chance to listen to CD all the way through. Incidentally, I have not written the ride so I do not know what the music is "supposed" to sound like.
Yes - it does sound similar to plenty of other MV scores (perhaps the makers of the film where after that feel ? ). Personally I quite enjoyed it anyway. I think the main theme (He's a pirate/end credits) is quite "piratical" in its sound whilst being another variation on The Rock theme it is still fast, furious and melodic. I'm afraid that gets me on Badelts side to start with! Not the most original to be sure - but still great to listen too.
I didn't have any problem with the production or sound quality either. Strong and deep - just the way I like it. Synthesised or not, they still "sound" like an orchestra although it is always that bit more satisfying to listen to when you know it is fully orchestral.
Pity the last track is so brief - the closing credits in the film are terrific music wise. I suppose you could splice sections from the other tracks on the CD to lenghten this section.
Overall I think there is more enjoyable music on this than The Rock (which after a sublime opening 3 and a half mins does get a bit rough!)
