I own the original Varese, and it still gets regular rotation in my collection. Outstanding score, and fortunately I love the sounds Goldsmith got out of his Yamaha keyboards. The Varese recording (CD) is fairly bright and a touch hissy (I believe recorded and mixed on analog 24-track), but it's also incredibly airy and spacious, and somehow it just all gelled in the mix and came together. For the age of the recording, the dynamic range is tremendous and I don't recall any distortion or clipping at all.
The interplay of the main themes is marvelous, as cited in the review. Playing this and "Total Recall" back to back makes you realize that Goldsmith may have been second to none in 'action movie' scoring, with the degree of respect and intelligence he brought to bear on the projects.
