Kudos to Borya on some excellent research (not to mention vast knowledge of one of the hardest and most beautiful languages on the planet). I have a brother in the airforce who is a translator, and he translates both Russian and Arabic, and he seems to agree with the errors in The Hunt for Red October (as great a movie as it is) as far as the translation goes. As for the songs, spot on. The 'Navy Hymn' was written for the movie; and as beautiful as the music is, the lyrics are atrocious. If you want a list of REAL hymns from all of Russia's colorful history, feel free to go to It has a breif history, free mp3's of the songs, and lyrics to some. Be warned that the lyrics pages are all in standard Russian, not translated OR in the latin alphabet. I've said too much, good day!
