Remember Return of the King?

I haven't heard the ROTS soundtrack yet, but remember the Return of the King soundtrack? It, too, was more devoted to less thematic, less developed, scene-specific background music, as opposed to the more full, thematic, developed scores of the first two Lord of the Rings movies. My point is that while the music may not be as entertaining a listen as the others in terms of developed themes and sub-themes, the music's goals should parallel the unique goals of the movie, and the ROTK soundtrack did that very well. ROTK didn't turn out to be as thematic and developed, so it was a different kind of score, not what we were all used to. I don't think this makes ROTK a weaker score, just a different one with different goals. So I think this should be taken into consideration when critiquing ROTS as well. I love the original trilogy scores for their heavily thematic and developed style, but you can't have an original trilogy soundtrack for a prequel trilogy movie, since the cinematic styles are so different. So, the soundtrack has to fit the movie, and while this may make for a less entertaining listen for those who expected lots of themes and development, differing goals must be taken into consideration: appreciating a differnt kind of soundtrack for what it is, judging it on its own merits and goals.

EXACTLY what I thought!   Wednesday, April 20, 2005 (3:18 p.m.)

... except for one thing: I think Return of the King had the degree of thematic development I had hoped for in The Two Towers.

Apart from that, I agree totally.
