Perhaps Williams deliberatly ignored this themes...   Wednesday, April 27, 2005 (8:59 a.m.)

Well, I really love John Williams Scores! The Star Wars scores in particular. I haven't heard ROTS yet, but I have read almost every opinion about it. It seems that a few ( a lot ) of the expected old themes don't appear in this score. ( Death STar motif, Emperor's theme very briefly etc... ) Perhaps Williams deliberatly ignored this themes because that could make him loose a oscarnomination or even a win! ( remember Shore's Two Towers??? ) We must not forget, it's been since 1991 ( Schindler's List )!!!!!! that he has won anohter golden statue. On the other hand; I think Williams want this to sound as a new score instead of a re-arrangement of an old one! He's to old to do that! Perhaps this could be his last work and probably therefore he writes all the things that he want's to write instead of writing things we ( filmmusic nerds :-p ) expect. Sheers and enjoy good filmmusic!

And don't forget that he got a nomination for The Prisoner Of Azkaban, which went into a similar direction (less usage of old material).
Concerning The Two Towers: I don't think it was his score per- se that ruled Shore out, but the confusion over the "no sequel" rule.

Right, what did we know then that the academy would actually give him the oscar for ROTK... No doubt about the sequel rule there
