I found this - during it's time of release - to be a pleasent surprise. Just off the back of his second 'Jurassic Park'score, it was a hark back to the days of his collaboration with Mark Rydell - specifically his score to 'The Reivers.' You could say it's one of John's lost and underrated scores, so props to La La Land for giving it the extended treatment.
It's dark, with an undercurrent of menace, due to the subject matter, but evenly balanced with light touches of the gospel choirs 'Look down, Lord.'
