James Newton Howard Captures Mix of Wonder and Horror

I was blown away by the musical score. Even while watching the movie, I was aware of the music and transported by it. James Newton Howard (JNH) doesn't need accolades from me, I realize. However, I wish I could convey to him the stirrings this score created in me. I did not see the "official" reviewer mention how deftly JNH straddled the line between wonder and horror, although he mentioned the straddle between midwest Americana and terror. He mentioned that the violins seem fiddle-like, ala Aaron Copland. To me, they were skeletal, like Danse Macabre. But the whole score was also majestic without being overwhelming. I agreed with the reviewer about the last two movements, in which themes seemed to be resolved. I am still playing the whole score over and over again. My thanks to JNH for this stunning score. ---John Monteverdi
