When Elfman ruled...... |

Christian is right. One needs to hear just the main theme from this magnificent score to wonder where the hell has THIS Danny Elfman gone in the last decade. A truly memorable work and a masterpiece compared to things like POTA, Hulk or Spider-man.

Well ... |

I think that it's not enough to compare just the scores, we have to compare the movies too. To be honest Hulk was a in' disaster. Spider Man was really enjoyable (in my opinion) ; a movie which, at least, didn't take itself too seriously, and the score has fit really well (again in my opinion) with it. Danny Elfman is still the same good guy, so are Hans Zimmer, James Newton Hawoard etc. The problem is not with them, the problem is with the quality of the movies. Unfortunately we can not expect good scores for bad movies. And if we look back ... well in this year Phone Booth was the only movie which had that quality (although it was shot in 2001). The rest suck ass. Last year Signs and Minority Report were good. The year before may be Tigerland etc. etc. etc. Year by year we get less good movies, that's the bigest problem. It's impossible to write good scores for such movies like: Hulk, Tears of the Sun, Dreamcatcher, Terminator 3 ... But it's just my opinion ..

Big Fish -- odds-on resurrection for Elfman! |

Folks, don't yet lose your hopes. I have just listened to the samples from Danny Elfman's new score "Big Fish" (coming out December 23 on Sony Classical label) and as little as the samples can signify, the man seems to have returned to the golden style of Sommersby. The Big Fish's key theme as heard in "Sandra's Theme", in particular, although somewhat reminiscent of the Legends of the Fall score's theme, is as savorous as ever.
Just can't wait for the Big Fish to come out!
