Holy crap those samples   Saturday, May 7, 2022 (11:34 a.m.)

I went to go see this movie with my little brother, and WOW did the sampled score stick out. Cringeworthy to hear just how awful the fake orchestra sounds.

While I'm still out of the Board for good, due to spending my time exploring sample libraries on YouTube in the past few years, I tend to see the good in them and when programmed well, it will sound close to real.

Some great examples:

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLS-pN_Fz3OFde0rCQi_9bnwo2l3El-MSN - My Computer is a 1950s Orchestra (by Alex Ball)
https://www.youtube.com/c/VictorKongMusic/videos - Victor Kong's orchestral mockup covers

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSwWSqxuRD4 - David Kudell's Westworld competition entry (note that there may be a few fake-sounding orchestral passages but it's overall realistic)

Is this all because of that John Williams post? If so, then I encourage you to move on from it. Everyone makes mistakes, and a mistake should not be enough to drive you away from an entire genre of music.

What about all these stuff I wanted you to listen to see the good in sample libraries?

Don't you worry, none of that went over my head. I'm an amateur composer, so I deal with orchestral samples a lot. But someone as high-profile as Holkenborg, scoring a film with a $100 million dollar budget, using samples? It's just lazy.
