Has there ever been a instrumental recording of the original theme?

Has there? The original theme rocks! But when its played with synth it isnt that good. But has there ever been a recording with real instruments?

Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops made a recording of the original Terminator theme. As with most Cincinnati recordings, there is pretty extensive use of synths and electronics, but mostly for percussive effects. The actual harmonic and melodic parts of the music are done by traditional orchestral instruments. The recording appears on "The Great Fantasy Adventure Album" and on the compilation CD "The Very Best of Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops-Top 20."

Yes. The expanded C.D. release of the original "Terminator" (subtitled "The Definitive Edition") includes a version of the main theme played on Classical strings. It's now out of print, but you can find it used.
