While I marvel at the technical aspects of this score and its capacity to both evoke and sustain the terror and anxiety of the film, in the final analysis I find it disappointing. The terrible pathos portrayed with the route of humanity calls for a strong emotional underpinning, yet Williams leaves us feeling nothing - a far cry from the wondrous emotional pathos he elicits in Revenge of the Sith with the storming of the Jedi Temple and the Fall of Anakin to name a couple cues. There he used his genius to arouse great emotion, with War of the Worlds the score is as cold and inhuman as the Martians and I am left wanting. Also this is essentially a father daughter story and yet we again find no emotional underpining. Evoking tenderness and love amidst war, death and chaos would surely have strengthened the film. For there to be contrast, darkness requires some light! In summation, this is not a zero sum problem - either terror or emotion, you can have both and as a composer whom I love and admire, I believe the maestro missed the mark here.:(
