My favorite cues AND songs of 2021 (so far)   Monday, November 8, 2021 (6:19 p.m.)

So one good thing about being stuck at home with COVID for the past two weeks (doing much better now!) is having a LOT more time to catch up on 2021 releases. As of this writing, I have a rough 'Top 20' list that includes both film and TV scores (I haven't really connected with any video game scores this year, unfortunately). I have also compiled a playlist of my favorite cues AND songs of 2021 (YouTube and Spotify links below). Mind you, it's a work in progress, and any suggestions/recommendations are welcome!!

Listen on YouTube: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLHNp4rGq18fAHAxbfqnFSqvpoBmJeRZS9

Love the list, seems most of it overlaps with my own, though I prefer different cues from some of the same scores included.

Only big omission, Christopher Drake's The Reckoning. Either "Mourning" or "End Titles." The score remains a favorite for me, and those two cues are in my short list of nominations.

Additions to consider:
*Dos-"Seven" (Diego Navarro)
*My Best Friend Anne Frank-"MyBest Friend Anne Frank" (Merlijn Snitker)
*The Underground Railroad-"Bessie" (Nicolas Britell)
*White Snow-"Refusal from the Olympics" (Alexei Aigui)
*Masquerade Night-"Happy Time"#16 (Naoki Sato

Oh, and really like "Unholy Matrimony 1&2" from Venom:LtbC. Beltrami action a-game.

No songs of note for me, or nothing that I've gone back to. However, also from Venom:ltbc, fun subtle inspiration/use of The Pixies "Where's My Mind" melody throughout. (I don't know, maybe that's actually thematic.) I enjoy that as inspiration more than yet another straight cover of the song.

At one point, I had included 'The Reckoning - End Titles' on my playlist, but it got to the point where every time the church organ would come in, I would just want to skip past it. It might very well be effective in context, but I simply do not have any desire to sit through it again.

Thanks for the recommendations!! I'll check 'em out.

• Now Playing: Civilization - Beyond Earth: Rsising Tide (Various, ****)

I hope your reconvalesence (or however that is spelled!) continues quickly and completely, Clint. I would send you warm thoughts, but you've got a furry cat master right there and are based in the Southwest, so you've probably got ample supply of warmth as it is... big grin

I have heard a grand total of four tracks in your list. Therefore, I can offer little to no substantive contribution.

There'll be some heavy lifting required for me to get anywhere near a well-founded Top Ten List this year...

The furry cat master and I thank you, kind sir. smile

I will say this: 5 of my current top 10 scores are by composers whom I had never of until this year! I'm amazed at the new talent rising up through the ranks.

It's ridiculous how much soundtrack writing I get done over the holidays as a result of being on break.

Finally got around to that one today. Fun stuff. That cello rendition of the Godzilla intro was dope.

> “Us Again” from Us Again (Pinar Toprak)
> “Two Friends” from The Wolf and the Lion (Armand Amar)

Was a little nervous at how many on here I hadn't heard, but turns out it's just 15. Seems like a lot I'm missing but I still have time. I actually cannot remember if I actually listened to the Eshkeri score or not. Which tells me it doesn't matter, I may as well have not haha.

> “Gaal Leaves Synnax” from Foundation - Season 1 (Bear
> McCreary)

This score hasn't clicked with me. It's a lot of McCrearyisms, which I'll always be on board for, but feels like something's missing. (Though it's also covers just a handful of episodes I think)

> “Catharsis” from June Again (Christopher Gordon)

YESSSSSS someone's listening to my shouting about this score!

> “The Power of Grayskull” from Masters of the Universe:
> Revelation - Season 1
(Bear McCreary)

I believe Mr. McCreary owes us a second volume...

> “Lord Raiden” from Mortal Kombat (Benjamin Wallfisch)
> “Origins” from Mortal Kombat (Benjamin Wallfisch)

Well this is a surprise haha. Guess I really should give this another shot.

And now, for the scores I must imagine you just haven't heard since they missed your list (After all, everyone agrees with me on the brilliance of The Green Knight, right?)

The Green Knight, Daniel Hart: "O Nyghtegale," "Now I'm Ready, I'm Ready Now"
Wrath of Man, Chris Benstead: "Coffee Frother"
Tom and Jerry, Christopher Lennertz: "Tom and Jerry Arrive," "Wedding Disaster"
Reminscence, Ramin Djawadi (don't remember specific cues)
The Mitchells Vs The Machines, Mark Mothersbaugh (Ditto)
Minari, Emile Mosseri: "Wind Song," "Minari Suite"
Margrete: Queen of the North, Jon Ekstrand
Bad Trip, Joseph Shirley/Ludwig Goransson
Free Guy, Chirstophe Beck
The Last Duel, Harry Gregson-Williams

Wait, if you listed a bunch of stuff from scores I liked, and I had to add ten more that I liked, does that mean...2021 turned out...fine? Good, even?? With two months left in the can?

I confess that the songs were the only thing I enjoyed about this score.

I should have remembered 'Wedding Disaster'--it's great!

> Margrete: Queen of the North, Jon Ekstrand

I'll check this one out!

> Free Guy, Chirstophe Beck

I found Beck's work on WandaVision much more interesting.

> The Last Duel, Harry Gregson-Williams

No score cue in The Last Duel really stood out to me--Grace Davidson's performance of the main theme's song arrangement easily outshines everything else on the soundtrack. Coincidentally, she performed the vocal solo in 'Goonfight at Gutterball Corral' from Gunpowder Milkshake! Her voice is stunning. smile

> Wait, if you listed a bunch of stuff from scores I liked, and I had to add ten more that I liked, does that mean...2021 turned out...fine? Good, even?? With two months left in the can?

If I can put together a 4+ hour-long playlist of the year's best film/TV music, I'd say we're doing just fine. wink
