Sticking with some video game music today. Got "Ghost of Tsushima" lined up today. I listened to it when it first came out, and really enjoyed it. Someone mentioned it in the post below and I figured it was time for a revisit. Probably all I'll have time for.

What are you listening to?

Far Cry 3 (Brian Tyler)
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (Alexandre Desplat)

On the former, how the heck can that beautiful title theme bookend so much awful music?!

Edit: There’s some okay to good stuff before “Rook Island”, that I’d completely forgotten about by the time I made it to “Broken Compass”. So, perhaps “awful” was a bit harsh.

Gave 'Star Trek Generations' another spin today. Yeah, I unequivocally *like* this Score now. It has really, really grown on me. There is some subdued music here but the two Main Themes and the really quite strong Action-Music more than makes up for it. And the entire Nexus-Sequence is absolutely beautiful, 'A Christmas Hug' hands down one of the most emotional Cues this entire Franchise has to offer. I'm not even joking here.

Part of me kinda thinks Jerry Goldsmith would have been the ideal choice, but all in all, I am glad Dennis McCarthy got this gig and the chance to work with an larger ensemble for once. Gives the movie a unique feel different from all the others. Kinda sad that this is still by far the largest film he has worked on.

Also gave 'The Forgotten Battle' by Emilie Levienaise-Farrouch a listen. I dunno, this is more of a Thriller- than a War-Score, mostly quivering, agitated String Sustains that vary in volume but the entire Score almost never change gears, remaining on edge thorough, only offering some tonal closure near the end. Ambient, but mostly organic as far as the performance is concerned. In very general terms, this is somehwhere between 'Dunkirk' and '1917' but not as opressive and relentless as the former, but also not as effective as the latter (and also missing its highlights). I don't think I can recommend this.

I also like this score more then most Trek fans. I think my biggest gripes are the weak villain material and how it doesn't really impact the action music. The action music functions fine and has urgency and excitement, but missing that touch that a well integrated villain theme could pull off. To me, it is a solid B rating. But when most of the film series hits A for the most part, this one kinda gets lost in the shuffle.

I dunno, despite the lack of a dedicated Theme for the Klingons I do find Soran's four-note motif quite effective as a musical calling card. And its kinda amusing how McCarthy used it exactly the same way Horner usually used *his* four-note-motif. wink

As a sitenote regarding the Klingons, in 'Soran Kidnaps Geordi' McCarthy briefly employs an Electric Guitar alongside the Orchestral Ensemble (when the Bird of Prey shows up). He did that a couple of times too in DS9 as well when Klingons were involved, for example in "Shattered Mirror": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k86OYJW4G4Q
Wish he would have used it more in "Generations", one of the very few real gripes I have with the Score.

Overall, of the thirteen ST-Movie-Scores, "The Voyage Home" is the only one I'd give less than four stars (if I were to use Southalls/CCs rating system) and even that one has weirdly grown on me. It is the weakest of the lot, but entirely appropiate for THAT particular movie. And 'Home Again' is kind of an highlight. smile

Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey (Silvestri)
^(I’m a sucker for this kind of music)

Also, I listened to the most recent episode of Legacy of John Williams podcast, featuring F Horn extraordinaire Sarah Willis. Terrific interview with lots of fun stories and anecdotes about the Maestro.
