I did, actually. I went to the guy's office and put our initial offer on the table and encouraged negotiation. We never got a counter-offer. Rather, he simply stated that they didn't commit the crime, which only confirmed them as shameless liars. After that, they escalated at every opportunity (plans to remove our trees and endanger our health, fighting a boundary fence, challenging the utility facilities at our entry, and, of course, the assault) in ways no reasonable neighbor would behave. We eventually had no choice but to sue them and launch the campaigns.

Their credibility is nil at this point, though there are always opportunities to negotiate. I thought the best solution here was to separate the two families, build a big fence between the properties, and never encounter each other again. They've elected to be increasingly in our face instead. Really unfortunate and short-sighted.
