Let the Ents march again! (Part II)   Sunday, March 20, 2022 (9:43 a.m.)
• Now Playing: (nothing)

Hey, all - I'm moving this topic to a new thread so the prior one doesn't become totally unwieldy in size and view counts.

I'm helping coordinate the next public campaign in support of keeping as much forest as possible in my Seattle-area community. There's widespread hope that our clear-cutting neighbors will have a change of heart in their plans to cut down more trees and restore only a minimal amount of their original violations, but if they continue to fight to worsen their climate change impacts, then we'll be ready.

In the interim, there's still a way you can help. It's fast, free, and easy.

Kitsap County is now approaching the time when it will decide what it will require the clear-cutters to do next. The county is still taking public comments via email. A quick email to them stating your opinion about deforestation can make a big difference. Some of you have already done this, which is great!

We've recently learned the best way to phrase an email to get feedback sent directly to the county's "Hearing Examiner" that will decide on the permit. The magic words are apparently "I want to be an interested party" and then they take the feedback more seriously.

So here's our ask: If you don't like seeing forest habitats destroyed to make way for agricultural operations, then send an email to Help@Kitsap1.com and say, "I want to be an interested party on permit 20-04869." And then you can say however much or little you want about climate change, forest restoration, wildlife suffering, or whatever aspect interests you the most. Your comment will then have a much higher chance to be considered.

It's as simple as that, guys. Stella and I appreciate the immense support we've received thus far, and keeping pressure on the county is our current goal. More info about this campaign is still at https://www.southworthforest.org/. Please share with your social groups, too!

Thanks,

Christian

Done. Let us know how else we can help, Christian. Hopefully, your neighbors will soon give in to pressure and set about repairing some of the damage they have caused.

I emailed them a few weeks ago and a person named Katie Canada emailed me back and said that my comment would be forwarded to the people in charge but she never confirmed my request to be an interested party. I think I phrased everything right. I told them that people like your neighbors are ruining the planet for everyone and they should restore at least half their forest since they killed it without following the law in the first place.

Thanks, Adam. We've had three people tell us now that they requested to be an interested party on the permit and the county never followed through with actually adding them. The feedback still made it into their system, though, which is what counts.

I email your government and say tree killers are stink butt and disgrace. In Denmark they be put in news for lies and crime against animal, so everyone know they are ass holes and cannot buy best foods from angry shopkeepers. Also I tell that Lorne Balfe will write music about the tree killers life and it will be better then JunkieXL but still bad.

That's really funny, actually. I can only imagine the staff at Kitsap County trying to decode Malmstrøm's insanity.

Count me in. I want to email the lead permitters too.

I like your phased approach with your campaigns. It's not like you haven't given these criminals possible off ramps. Did you ever try negotiating with them directly?

Thanks, Brian. Permit reviewer contacts are at http://www.southworthforest.org/contact-kitsap/.

I did, actually. I went to the guy's office and put our initial offer on the table and encouraged negotiation. We never got a counter-offer. Rather, he simply stated that they didn't commit the crime, which only confirmed them as shameless liars. After that, they escalated at every opportunity (plans to remove our trees and endanger our health, fighting a boundary fence, challenging the utility facilities at our entry, and, of course, the assault) in ways no reasonable neighbor would behave. We eventually had no choice but to sue them and launch the campaigns.

Their credibility is nil at this point, though there are always opportunities to negotiate. I thought the best solution here was to separate the two families, build a big fence between the properties, and never encounter each other again. They've elected to be increasingly in our face instead. Really unfortunate and short-sighted.

They are too selfish and entitled to see the best solution. Shameless people like that only know how to escalate until they get what they want no matter the cost to their reputation. They don't care if alot of their neighbors hate them. If I made my neighbors weep doing a criminal act and the whole neighborhood found out about it, I would want to sell and get the hell out of there. But I love my neighbors, so I would never do anything to harm them in the first place.

It's pretty clear they were hoping you would abandon your property but now that plan backfired badly and they are stuck with you. You are still planning to build a house there, right?

Oh, we'll definitely live on that property. The neighbors have actually galvanized our commitment to stay and fight for that property and our rights. They may prevail in some battles along the way, but we'll be there every day, every night, reminding them of what they did to the planet, the community, and us. I am, as you well know, an extremely patient and pertinacious person.

I'm more at peace with all of this than Stella, because I know that even in the worst case scenario, we'll restore our remaining forest, we'll have the hearts of the community supporting us, and we'll win the battle of karma in the end. We are more caring and conscientious people than they are, and their actions will forever weigh on their souls and those of their children.

Anyone from any country can comment and have an impact. The local government here is not checking where people are commenting from. They typically just need to know your name and email address so they can send you a notification at the end of the review process. So even if you're in Canada, your voice can be heard for this forest. smile

I just heard from the County today. They are still accepting comments and considering what to do about this clear-cut.

Thanks!

Christian

It appears the clear-cutters are complaining about Filmtracks   Friday, April 1, 2022 (10:23 p.m.)
• Now Playing: (nothing)

It appears the clear-cutters complained to Kitsap County about the existence of these threads at Filmtracks. The county came looking for them specifically today but it seems they never found this forum. (It's always fascinating to me that people don't realize the Scoreboard is a semi-private forum, so it can't be found from searches externally or site-wide.)

I imagine the clear-cutters aren't thrilled about people from around the world submitting comments to our local county about the effects of climate change. That's a myopic viewpoint on their part, as every four acres converted from forest to agriculture harms the planet in sum. Frankly, if I were the county, I'd give even more careful consideration to a permit drawing such wide interest.

The irony here is that the majority of comments going to the county about this forest destruction are coming from the local community, including neighbors and climate activists. I just met another new direct neighbor of the clear-cutters this past week and she hates the deforestation and intended to tell the county so. The SouthworthForest.org site for this cause is still spreading around social media, so protesting these threads on Filmtracks is not a great use of time.

At any rate, the clear-cutters must not want your opinions heard. Don't let them silence you if you're on the fence about supporting us. Stella and I have always made our goals and intentions about this campaign clear at Filmtracks, on the community site, the GoFundMe page, and social media. We have no need to obfuscate like our adversaries.

Thanks again, everyone!

Christian

Wow. Are the clear cutters really that stupid? I mean, they bought a forest when they wanted to have a pasture, so yeah. It's bad enough to intentionally break the law, but then they complain to the authorities when people everywhere get mad about it? They must live in a totally different reality. I hope you and your community bust their asses. Not like, literally, but you know, make them realize that they suck and have to do better.

The county is annoyed by these people. They've whined about a variety of things, from the permit requirements to their desire to start work before the permit is issued. They can't even submit the permit materials without asking for help, and the system is not that hard to use.

And, of course, they do the "aw, shucks, we want to do the right thing" routine even though they are blatant, intentional law-breakers who don't care about the neighbors. Everyone sees through that, and it's annoying.

They need to be complaining about your review of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. I would trade a grove of trees for a more competent and sane analysis of that score, assuming you are capable of it. Which you aren't.

That's very interesting. These neighbors are even more selfish and entitled than I thought. It reveals that they are afraid that your campaign is having an impact. Let them complain.

Local governments deal with campaigns against permits regularly. I hope the permitters laugh off your egocentric neighbors because they deserve only scorn and pity. Is there any indication that the permitters are forcing more reparations from them?

Agreed. It reflects badly on them. The county is well aware of the local part of the campaign, so I highly doubt the clear-cutters can succeed in poisoning the legitimacy of all the comments about their actions just because of the opinions of a few at Filmtracks. Heck, some of the community-based activists live afar but have ties to this area and are getting involved anyway, so the location of the commenters is totally irrelevant.

The corrective permit is not progressing as the clear-cutters had hoped. This past week wasn't great for them on that front. We'll learn more soon.

The county is receiving a steady stream of comments in opposition. A regional climate activist has gotten involved. We've talked to six other direct neighbors of the clear-cutters, and five of them are appalled by their actions.

The campaign has spread to a variety of groups and forums, and the clear-cutters seem to have found only two of them, including here. My server gets pinged whenever a new Facebook group shares the campaign, and that's where the spread is really happening. Filmtracks has a small role to play in all of this, but the clear-cutters are grasping at whatever they can find.

So we definitely know they are reading this topic. That's great. Now they can read something directly from me.

To clearcutting liars:

I downloaded your original permit papers - the bad hand drawn map and the bad nonformatted letter promising not to cut down trees close to a stream. You lied on both. Don't try to tell anyone you didn't lie. Once liars, always liars.

It's okay for you to lie to your county but not okay for us to comment about how your lies effect the rest of us? You lied to Christian Clemmensen, someone we all respect. Now he spends time and money exposing your lies. You don't like him publicizing your lies? Then you shouldn't have lied and hurt his family.

I'm not a tree hugger - I live in the concrete jungle and I like it. But I don't tolerate liars. I hate rich liars especially. I hope your lies are exposed to your entire city and county. I hope the newspapers write about your lies. I hope all your friends learn that you are liars.

Once liars, always liars.

Those are great questions, as they speak to the double-standard that's so thick with the clear-cutters that they probably feel like victims here. It goes beyond not caring about the neighbors, animals, climate, etc. being hurt; rather, they likely don't understand why anyone would care so much. That's the true evil here.

Stella and I have not encountered a single individual who thinks we are being too rough on the clear-cutters. In fact, the consensus seems to be that we're being too soft on them thus far. We'll crank up the intensity if needed.

Christian
