Well....Top Gun Maverick is out.   Friday, May 27, 2022 (8:35 a.m.)

I'm hesitant to say much about the soundtrack, because A) my last few immediate Zimmer takes weren't too appreciated, and B) there's WAY less actual score on this goddamned thing then I expected, actually sorta pissed off to be honest.

But whatever -- let's just hope for a separate score-only release soon. What did you guys think of what we have?

Personally, I'll be a total dick and say it's the biggest disappointment I've had since Dune, which was the biggest disappointment since No Time To Die :P

Apparently there is not really much score anyway?

Don't care, keep taking those takes.

...it's Top Gun? Did you expect a lot of score? They've gotta sell you on the Gaga song being the new Take My Breath Away and the song by *checks notes* OneRepublic??? as the new Danger Zone. While ALSO including Danger Zone.

Haven't heard yet because I keep playing that Obi-Wan Kenobi theme instead.

Ignoring your total dick (the obvious jokes are left as an exercise for the reader to come up with), I'm still shocked you had enough expectations to be disappointed.

"I would also use that phrase "I guess I expected more" to describe the shit-tastic movie that everyone loves for some inexplicable reason. Just about the dopiest, dullest flick to ever be so widely adored. Theme is great, rest...meh." - Riley Webster, June 5, 2020, about Top Gun.

I did, yeah. Every blockbuster is over 2 hours now and considering Zimmer is as big a name for scoring that you can get, I definitely expected a lot more music. Hell, even WItH the songs the thing is barely 45 mins! Quite surprising.

Yeah o saw your link there, but I’m waiting to hear it in the full score I think.

Go figure you’d deep dive ways to point out my inconsistencies again hahaha.

Ok so here’s the explanation - my biggest gripe with Zimmer is that he takes himself way too seriously lately. I miss the fun power anthem Zimmer of old, and when even James Bond couldn’t make him leave his brooding Uber-serious Batman side, I figured that part of him was gone forever…

….except, TOP GUN?! Like I said in that old thread you posted, the movie is so silly and trivial and goofy that I expected the movie to be similar (looks like that was incorrect too) and so therefore I thought this would be Power Anthem Zimmer again, using the cheesy original theme and taking it sailing, like a slightly brawnier version of Mancina’s Planes.

….but the album we got was just, wow. So much meh. One really fun track utilizing the theme in a new way, and the rest was anonymous and surprisingly subdued underscore. Hell there wasn’t even much action music, which REALlY surprised me (also was writing drunk while listening to it so it’s possible I’m wrong and missed something, but I dunno…)

And I was almost going to ask that it probably does not sound like "Broken Arrow" (haven't heard it yet).

Well....Top Gun Maverick is out.   Friday, May 27, 2022 (11:28 a.m.)

Considering that No Time to Die ended up on my top five scores of 2021, and that Dune was one of my most frequently returned to guilty pleasures of the year, I’m going to hold out hope yet

So now that I've listened to it...it's whatever, fine? Didn't like the Lady Gaga song on first listen but it's growing on me. Honestly, the score parts feel like if Journey to the Line was an early 2000s action movie score. Similar prorgressions but with a heavier rock presence. It's fine, probably won't listen to it again much.

The most lazy work by zimmer and friends since 12 Years A Slave.
Not bad as Dune of course, but just generic boring 20 min of music and copy paste of the anthem from the original film.
Do you really need 4 composers on the cover for this?

If they didn't just give Danger Zone a full orchestral treatment (complete with choir), they failed to spike the easy volleyball.

Forget it, Riley. It's Top Gun.

But honestly, the original film is basically just "scored" with the songs outside of maybe... three or four instances of actual score.

> What did you guys think of what we have?

Haven't gotten to it yet. Might update later tonight after giving it a run-through.

According to Lorne Balfe a more complete score album will be released at some point (or so I read somewhere). Although I don't think there's that much missing.

Man, how can somebody be so wrong not once, not twice but three times in a row. Quite impressive!

Anyway, the score is excellent and even more so on the context of the film. This one will definitely end up in my Top 10

I hope you're right about the first part...

....REALLY?! Like...what are you hearing that's so good? I can understand people loving No Time and even Dune because at least that was different, interesting music (annoying, to me, but I can still get it). But Top Gun just sounded like generic underscore mixed with occasional boring modern chugging and then occasionally a nice rift on Faltermyer's theme. What was it you liked so much?

I'm curious how you've come to the conclusion that Riley is wrong about his own disappointment.

The album indeed makes it look like a little score. But plenty of cues are missing.

To be precise, aside from 'Main Titles' and 'Darkstar', ALL tracks are from the third act of the movie. And even then, some very cool cues from that third act are also missing tongue

From what I heard, the actual score is around 80 minutes long. Hopefully a more complete release will arrive soon and will do it justice!
