I think the part that you touch on with Inception that is rarely mentioned is how many elements Zimmer had to meld together and did it well. The sci-fi element, the heist element, the dream element, the tragic element, etc. For me, the score is just a tad below his all time greats because while I think he conceptually represented each of those elements well, the execution could have been much more spectacular. More meat, more complexity, more building onto intriguing ideas.
