Come to think of it, I don't think I ever responded myself to the whole Marxist Oboe story. It's like one of those stories you read in Yahoo news' "Oddly Enough" section. The oboe story is rather tame compared to some of the others you read there. Truth, after all, can be stranger than fiction.
As for why so many people keep responding to it... I do have an answer for that. A few weeks ago, a marching band discussion site linked to the original Marxist Oboe post. I went over there and figured that it was a place for marching band enthusiasts (looked like 16 - 22 year-olds... high school and college) could talk about various marching band things. They got into arguments about flutes versus oboes and clarinets versus bassoons. Not all that interesting. But they all flocked to the Marxist Oboe thread and a bunch of them responded. I don't see the URL in my logs anymore, so I suspect the thread will go into hybernation again. Until the next linkage, of course...
That happens a lot at this site. When you see a thread here or on a comment area that will never die, with hundreds (or even thousands) of views per post, then it's always because that thread was linked to from external places. The search engines are also indexing individual posts at the site, so if you type in "Harry Pothead and the Magic Goat" in some search engines, you may well end up here. Thus, enter the perverts and wackos.
But I should remind you guys that I gave you the choice last November for a ScoreBoard that only allowed threads within the last 365 days to be active. Older ones would be archived and locked. But hey, most people said that they like the board the way it is, so alas, we have another Marxist Oboe revival!
The Christian Right is slowly starting to cause trouble again, and they are the greater concern. On the other hand, every time they protest something, they send more traffic to the site...
