The dictionary defines it as the following:
a. A coating or an incrustation of filth or refuse.
b. Something loathsome, despicable, or worthless.
c. One who is contemptible or disgusting
> Yes, but an insult rather than an expletive.
In my experience insults and expletives are fairly interchangeable. For example, if I call you a f*ckwit (not that I ever would ), then I've both insulted and sworn at you.
