True. Same thing goes for the SW sequels, the Indiana Jones trilogy, Return of the King etc. Sometimes it appears that AMPAS themselves don't know what there own rules are, much less how they work. Only in one point they have been consequent: picking the worst of the five nominees as the winner.

As for PotC 2...well, it's a multi-composer score, so that'll rule it out for sure.

As for what might be nommed next year...absolutely no idea...2006 has been a very mediocre year for scores so far. No clue whatsoever. But then again, 60% of the nominees (ie, 3 out of 5) are usually from films released in November or December, me again!

Where's that dratted Nyze when you could have use for him?!
