Buy it... if there is no bottom to the well of despair in which you delight in totally nondescript and narratively inept synthetic horror scores.

Avoid it... because your One Wish Willow novelty gift was faulty and you could not ask it to forever spare you the experience of hearing this score.

Obsession: (Rock Burwell) Once in a rare moon, an independent horror flick generates so much good buzz that it becomes a blockbuster sensation. Despite its rather pedestrian premise, 2026's Obsession (technically a 2025 film due to a sole regional film festival but not distributed widely until the following year) became an unimaginable success for Focus Features and dominated the box office against mainstream studio behemoths. Its ultra-low budget premise suggests that a gag gift from a novelty store, a "One Wish Willow," actually possesses a supernatural ability to grant one wish to the owner who can break it. The item destroys the lives of four friends who work at the same music store when one of the hapless fools uses the toy to ask for another of the friends to fall in love with him. That selfish behavior thus sets off a bizarre tale of obsessive behavior that draws in the other two youngsters, ultimately leaving three of them dead and the other hopelessly in need of therapy. It's the kind of picture that offers no positive outlook on humanity, in both the actions of the morons on screen and the fact that audiences can't get enough of such drab and depressing depictions of self-destruction. The filmmaker, Curry Barker, has used the picture to launch a career to better recognition and spoils, and such scenarios often befall the composers who accompany their collaborations. Young music producer and songwriter Rock Burwell had worked with Barker in prior interactions about unrelated song production, and Burwell admits that the two live in close proximity to each other. That's all it took for Burwell to become a feature film composer, the two working casually on this project piecemeal. (The director actually created the source jingles for the "One Wish Willow" in the story.) When pondering how to tackle the music for Obsession, they took the opposite approach that Bernard Herrmann would have, and perhaps this is no surprise given that Burwell has no substantive experience or training in film scoring. Barker and the composer received inspiration from 1980's to modern synthetic music and ambient tones from social media. The director sent him random music from a variety of locales, including Tik Tok, and no specific scores or composers were explicitly cited as influencing this work. The duo's strategy was obviously to underplay the role of the music, making it atmospheric to a fault.
