I feel both Horner and Zimmer, who are two very different composers, were perfect for their films respectively. Nolan (Dark Knight Rises) wanted that intense, bombastic, sort of futuristic feel and male choir kind of a score from Zimmer while Webb (Spiderman)was looking for a throw-back feel to his film from Horner. It all comes down to what the director wants, and in film business, they are very specific about what sound they're looking for. Remember sir, Webb wanted music that had warm, love themes (which Horner is great at), yet still have that cinematic, heroic throw-back feel. So in the end, whether you like it or not, Horner gave Webb what he wanted. And you can say Zimmer gave Nolan what he wanted. I hope you understand that both composers are very different from each other. It's not necessarily that one composer is better than the other, it's what sound the director wants to represent his/her film(s).
