Looks like we're adding another one to Zimmer's list of techniques, along with:

*eighth-note ostinatos
*hemiolas (3/4 rhythms in 6/8 setting, like in Drink Up Me Hearties in PotC:AWE)
*horns
*no woodwinds
*suspended chords
*tolling bells

And it's:

*plodding strings :p
