its amazing how ppl react to a review of a soundtrack ... its just a review, opinion of one person
most ppl will watch the movie and buy the soundtrack no matter what the clemmenson says ... its upto the listener to either enjoy it or not, but i wonder if any soundtrack is worthy enough to call someone a racist. even two year old kids have better issues to quarrel about.
but i do feel the clemmenson hasnt been fair in the review either ... the score is clearly a brilliant mix of both the composers (rightly stated in the review) ... and in a way every cue by james newton horward seems to have got a coating of zimmerian music ... but the clemmenson review critisizes zimmer all the way and hardly mentions horward in it. when i had first read the review, before hearing the soundtrack ... i did think low of the score, i thought may be its a typical zimmer electronic score. only after listening to it did i realise that the score is drenched with beautiful melodies from horward with zimmerian touch to them
it made me wonder how movie scores are reviewed. i believe they must be judged on two criterias ... its functionality in the movie and as standalone album (star wars and lord of the rings are another type ... which need to maintain the same flow but not in this case)
about the soundtrack, well i personally love it. zimmer and horward got together some great music ideas which is very functional in the movie and makes a great listening as a stand alone album too. both have used their strenghts and the result is amazing. its not the john williams type of music to take you by storm with its themes in the first listen but surely holds ones from the first listen and grows on with subsequent hearing.
unlike star wars, batman begins is surely not a extension to the earlier batman films, thus i cant reason why this score shouldnt make a fresh start. i personally wasnt impressed by the cartoonist world shown in the earlier batman movies. thus i cannot relate with the fans of the earlier batman fans anguish over this score ... but i love this one for what it is.
who can deny that Marcrotus and Corynorhinus are tracks of pure magic and surely the action cues are driving and stick in ones mind long after they are heard ... what else would a music director or a listener want??
this score surely deserves more than what rated here maybe if the score is judged on its own ground rather than as an extension to the earlier batman movies, one would appreciate it the way it truly deserves.
