To my opinion, a very good score. I love the Elfman's but I think that this movie works wonderfully with the Zimmer/ Newton-Howard's.
I think the review is a little harsh. Reviews always compare one movie score to the composer's others scores. A non sense. Movies aren't the same!
For exemple, score fans that like brassy, action and some kind of mythical music would prefer, so to say, "Revenge of the sith" (that I love) instead of "Memoirs of a Geisha" (I love it too).
You don't expect fox fanfare, The imperial March or the militaristic main titles of "Star Wars" on "Geisha"?
For me for Batman Begins it is the same. The movie is so different from the previous ones that the score should be, MUST be different.
Take a cup of tea, or a glass of whisky, if you like, sit down, close your eyes and listen to that music. And feel the pain, the terror of that boy. Feel the conflict inside him... and feel Molossus (track 10) with the force and crescendo of a bulldozer... and BATMAN BEGINS!!!
