After repeated listens and experimenting at the piano, I'm pretty sure that the effect which CC deems as pizzicato strings is really the piano being played on strings pressed down inside the piano. The "unequal" temperament effect I feel is created by the strings being held down with differing levels of pressure.

Could be electronically altered string pizzicato. When I experimented on the piano, it just sounded so similar to the effect used in the score...
