Where do you find source cues in PotC?

Actually, I don't think there's even one cue in the film that stands out for me. It's just more, and even more more of the same.

Well, next time you watch Dead Man's Chest, listen closely to the music. There is a ton of fun exciting action music, most of which is not included in the soundtrack. Ex: Cannibal Island scene, Kraken Attack 2. As for source cues, just listen to Two Hornpipes. Even part of the "Dinner is Served" track could be considered a source cue.

But everyone has their own opinion.

I'm in full agreement with your petition, Michael. I was disappointed in the score that got on the soundtrack, or, more appropriately, what didn't get on. Lots of thematic references were left off, along with some of the best action music. Actually, I think that both the "Jack" and "Kracken" suites contain some of the action music from the film, or at least an adapted version of that music. (Especially true of the Kracken suite.)

Still, I really would like the first part of the music for the three-way duel ("Wheel of Fortune" is just the second part) and also for the use of the "He's a Pirate" theme near the end of the film. (The part when Jack comes, and they play the theme a lot faster.)

About source cues... "Two Hornpipes" is definitely a source cue, though I believe that the first part of "Dinner is Served" could both be considered either way. And as much as I love the waltz at the end of the latter track, I would give it up just to hear one full quote of the "He's a Pirate" theme.

Two Hornpipes is also better in the film version because there's a brass section as well and it's just more fun.

The commercial album for DMC just totally messes up the score, exposing almost all of the guitar grunging (only one left out, really) and leaving out the best parts, like the cannibal island chase, the complete three-way swordfight, and the final chase and kraken battle. Hopefully a full album will be released (given the popularity, it's almost certain) so that I don't have to hear mild sound effects and slightly weaker sound on some of the tracks from the current bootleg.

I agree there should be an expanded release of DMC that's in film order, or close to it, that includes the full end credits suite, and leaves off the trance.

While we're at it, though the album for "At World's End" treats the music better than the DMC album, it too has sequence issues (Ex: The two parts of "I Don't Think Now is the Best Time" are in reverse order!) and could use an expanded release.

The omission of the end credits was the biggest disappointment. I absolutely loved that Jack Sparrow action theme arrangement that was interpersed with the new version of "He's A Pirate." There's also a neat solo-organ version of Jones' Theme featured as well. Heck, the whole ending is such a massively entertaining listen, that I spliced together the ten minute CD recording of "Hello Beastie" with the nine minute credits from the DVD; in essence, the "complete" version of the finale. The problem with the end credits is that the beginning is SO MUCH WEAKER. It's the problem cited by everyone who dislikes Hans Zimmer: the whole orchestra sounds like it's playing the same note. The Kraken Rock Opera also shows up in full fury in the end credits. But some of the action stuff is still fun.

You're absolutely right! I very much missed the end credits. Hey, that's a great idea! I had considered doing that once or twice but never got around to it.

I'm waiting in anticipation for the AWE DVD/Blu-ray release, so I can splice in that wonderfully lengthy suite arrangement of "Hoist the Colours" that's featured during the end credits. (Which, sadly, isn't on the soundtrack release either.)

How do you go about splicing CD/DVD music together ? My splicing exploits only go as far as taping the "best bits" from CD's and merging them as best I can. Many thanks.

Well, I use a suite of programs for my editing needs. "DVD Audio Extractor" comes recommended for ripping the audio itself, and I use "Acoustica MP3 Audio Mixer" and "Sound Forge" for splicing and the actual editing. You should be able to find them easily enough with a Google search. There's a bit of a learning curve, but you'll be able to jump right into them if you've had any experience with audio editing before.
