The Oscar shortlists are out. The 15 scores up for Best Score are:

- All Quiet on the Western Front, Volker Bertelmann
- Avatar: The Way of Water, Simon Franglen
- Babylon, Justin Hurwitz
- The Banshees of Inisherin, Carter Burwell
- Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Ludwig Göransson
- Devotion, Chanda Dancy
- Don't Worry Darling, John Powell
- Everything Everywhere All at Once, Son Lux
- The Fabelmans, John Williams
- Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, Nathan Johnson
- Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio, Alexandre Desplat
- Nope, Michael Abels
- She Said, Nicholas Britell
- The Woman King, Terence Blanchard
- Women Talking, Hildur Guđnadóttir

I predicted 10 of these (12, if you include my two 'long shots'). Really surprised to see All Quiet on the Western Front, Don't Worry Darling, and Everything Everywhere make the list, but happy for Powell - that score worked like gangbusters in context. Very disappointed for The Batman and Till.

How All Quiet got on there and NOT Till doesn't make a lick of sense. Both are the kind of award-winning drama's that always get technical nods to compensate for not winning the big guys, but...Till actually had music instead of noise :P

I think the final 5 will be:

Pinocchio
Babylon
Women Talking
The Fabelmans
The Woman King (or Black Panther...can't decide which). My guess is either Hurwitz or Desplat takes the win.

Also, welcome back!

These are the ones I heard and of those, "Way of Water", "Wakanda Forever", "The Fabelmans", "Nope" and "The Woman King" would be my picks, with the Avatar-Score being by favourite.

Solid 13/15. Even though I dislike the Powell, it’s at least interesting. “All Quiet” sticks out like a sore thumb, though.

It would be absolutely hilarious and bizarre if after getting snubbed for writing literally the best score of the last decade, Powell were to win for this, of all things. Doubt it'll even get nominated after the reception (and behind-the-scenes drama) that film got, but still, an amusing thought.

Yeah, I’m confused too. Darn good score - if you took out all the aggressively and unpleasant atonal moments of suspense it would’ve been a Trevor Rabin war score from the 00’s like Great Raid or Flyboys.

Obviously nowhere near as good, but still, it was reminiscent of em haha

Devotion raised too many echoes of things like Midway and Dunkirk for me to really get into.

I never listened to Midway but...Dunkirk? I can hear some Media Ventures-style bits in it, but definitely nothing that reminded me of Dunkirk. Which definitely didn't have any flute writing like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPIFdjau23M

(It's fine if you hated it, it's just funny because 1. This is one of those scores I've really started banging the drum for, and 2. It almost feels like we heard different scores.)

These ones are currently on my short list of stuff to review before making my rankings, so that's neat.

> - All Quiet on the Western Front, Volker Bertelmann

Didn't listen to this one because I didn't hear good things from y'all. Honestly forgot about the film and surprised to see it here.

> - The Banshees of Inisherin, Carter Burwell

Works well enough in the (pretty good) film, but not particularly notable in Burwell's catalog.

> - Don't Worry Darling, John Powell

Huh, neat. Meant to relisten, haven't gotten around to it.

> - Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio, Alexandre Desplat
> - She Said, Nicholas Britell

Both of these are...fine I guess. Wish I liked Pinocchio more.

> - Women Talking, Hildur Guđnadóttir

Still waiting on this one.

Yeah, shocked there's no Giacchino, especially since it seemed Batman was picking up steam with various critics groups.

Re: Official: 15 score shortlist for Best Score Oscar

Reasonable list of scores. I’d be happy to see any of the following nominated:

- Avatar: The Way of Water (Simon Franglen)
- Babylon (Justin Hurwitz)
- The Fabelmans (John Williams)
- Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (Nathan Johnson)
- Pinocchio (Alexandre Desplat)
- Nope (Michael Abels)
- The Woman King (Terence Blanchard)

Sentiment wants me to see Williams win, but I suspect it’ll be either Hurwitz or Desplat (which I’d also be OK with).

Not a bad list. I am rooting for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Easily the most creative scores of the year.

Glad to see you back!

I would love for Avatar, Babylon, The Women King, Glass Onion and Don't Worry Darling to get nominated, but it definitely wouldn't happen in this combination. So glad that Powell's score is up there.
