I think I may have been put off listening to this when Clemmensen and Edmund were so negative about it. I will say I liked the film way more than I expected to, though.

Of the ones I've heard here, I think these seem fair - though I feel like I remember United 93 being a little better than that.

I *think* I'd put Antz at the bottom of this pile. It's fun, of course, but the Ice Age scores are far more accomplished, Robots more catchy, and I sometimes think Ferdinand a small masterpiece, it's got such a blend of heart and flow. I can't find Agent Cody Banks in full anywhere...

10 de-facto five-star scores, jolly good. I've tried to rank the top handful several times, and failed, but here goes again...

1. HTTYD2
2. Chicken Run
3. HTTYD3
4. HTTYD
5. Solo
6. Call of the Wild
7. Kung Fu Panda
8. Pan

And then I'm not sure. I do know I've never quite warmed to Paycheck as much as these others, though.

Curious to see Edmund chip in here.

I debated even counting it as a Powell score, given that nearly all of it was written by David Buckley and Powell's team.

Yeah, the secondary market prices for the out-of-print Intrada CD are insane. Pity the full score hasn't made it to digital / streaming yet.

I had the original album as a high-end ***1/2 work. The Deluxe Edition was, to put it mildly, a revelation.

Powell to me is a bit like Desplat in that he usually lands around the 3.5 range - better than solid, I'm rarely disappointed, and I can understand where the love comes from, but I don't often share it. I'm guessing I'm one of the only people that didn't include a Powell score in my top 5 from the 2010s. Still, no denying your top 3.

I kinda love that you're just a little lukewarm on Powell, Desplat, and Giacchino; I feel like most people here love at least one of them. I mean, it probably is frustrating for you a lot of the time because other people are going nuts over one thing or another from them, but it amuses me. (Should I throw McCreary in there too?)

Related to this, (and this is directed at John B.) I'd love to know who your favorite film composers are because I always associate you with HGW and Menken (mostly for Mirror Mirror) and that's about it, haha. I actually just pulled up your decade list to illuminate things and was also interested that no John Williams score cracked your top 20 and outside of Maleficent, you're not as high on JNH's recent output.

Just seeing this after I responded to Vik! Those two, along with Williams and Horner, will be responsible for an inordinate percentage of my all-time list, if I ever get around to making it. But the reality is my lists of that kind tend to be pretty hodgepodge composer-wise. To your point, my decade list had very few repeats (Powell with 3, Horner 2), and only a couple of composers have showed up on multiple lists for me over the past few years. Meanwhile I see others highly rank scores by their favorites every year without fail. I think maybe that's partially attributable to me being pickier about genre, at least on album, which is how I most frequently experience new scores (I have very little time to watch films these days, unfortunately).

For Williams, Star Wars has just never really done it for me, and unfortunately it's been a while since he hit the highs I hope for. War Horse and Lincoln were just outside my 20, but probably could slot in somewhere in the teens depending on my mood, and I did really enjoy The Post.

The same-ish is true for Howard: his 2000-2007 run was amazing, but after that Maleficent is his only top-tier score, I think. I was and remain pretty down on the first Fantastic Beasts score, although the second was a big improvement and the third maybe even more so.

It's hard calling Menken a favorite composer in the same way - he's just produced a handful of incomparable works that hold nostalgic significance and have held up amazingly well over the years. The latter point is really important - The Lion King, for example, inspires the same nostalgia, but the songs haven't held up as well.

The first two are a clear step above the third for me, as you know.

Yep to the last part.

The truth is there are very few composers who I'd say are day-1 listens for me (Williams, HGW, Menken, Klein, Deriviere, Blanchard, Franglen/Warner might be getting close but need more evidence, Bowers/Cannon were close but have had a few eh scores), not because they're necessarily my favorites, but because I think there's a high-percentage chance the score's going to do something that works for me. Beyond that, there are:

- Composers who I expect will produce something of high quality, but whose music is less likely to emotionally engage as a standalone listen (e.g., Powell and Desplat, but also Doyle, McCreary, Britell, Hart, Debney, Elfman, and others)
- Composers who are total wild cards (e.g., Howard, Zimmer, Goransson)
- Composers whose scores I have low expectations for, based on my taste (e.g., Balfe, Giacchino, Tyler, Beltrami, Pemberton, Abels)
- Other composers I have no/minimal expectations for, because I don't know them as well or have heard enough of a mix to not really know what to think

I'd imagine others have a similar tiering? But yeah, to your point, it means a lot of the biggest names that get a ton of discussion lately (e.g., Balfe, Giacchino, Zimmer, Tyler) don't exactly inspire me to jump in.

Oh all right then, since we've spent so much of today talking, remind us what your top ten was.

I think X-Men: the Last Stand and Bourne Supremacy are much too low. I'd certainly have both over Paycheck. Haven't heard Happy Feet.

Powell's an interesting composer. He gets a lot of love from our community, rightfully so, but I still hesitate to list him with the greatest film composers. Is top 10 scores can score toe-to-toe with just about anyone else, but once you get outside his top 15 scores, that's where the difference occurs. Having said that, I'd be a happy camper if he was scoring as many films as Balfe or some other prolific composers.

The Last Stand is terrific, but can wear you down.

If it's any consolation, Bourne Supremacy was in the ***1/2 range before the rundown started.
