Now Playing: Dune (sketchbook) - Zimmer

Hey everyone, I have an embarrassing score confession to make.

Despite my better judgment, I'm actually really looking forward to Zimmer's score for Dune 2. And I'm not entirely sure why.

It could be that I thought it worked well in the film, and the trailer for part 2 looks to be an even bigger and better film (I haven't read the book(s) and have little memory of the 80's film, so I don't know what to expect).

It could be that Zimmer has a decent track record of improving his music with a sequel (Dead Man's Chest, Kung Fu Panda 2, Angels & Demons, The Dark Knight).

It could be that the music from the first film has slowly grown on me over time. It didn't deserve an Oscar and some parts are more sound design, but the parts that do connect for me, really hit the mark. It still probably hovers around the 3 star range, but it's a damn interesting 3 star score.

I don't know why I'm excited to hear this score when it comes out, I just know that I am.

Have people written this one off based on the first score, or are others anticipating what Zimmer might deliver?

At the very least, it won't be redundant. "Run it back" is rarely that man's refrain.

I may not adore it, but I'll definitely enjoy studying it - and find the media feeding frenzy amusing.

Zimmer would not agree with you about one of those.

I am looking forward to Dune Part Two because of 2 reasons:

1. Zimmer doesn't get to follow up on his ideas recently and I feel like building upon the first score is exactly what is needed to get the most out of the ideas. Scores like The Creator, Man of Steel, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and Dark Phoenix had intriguing ideas, but really need a second score to flesh them out, and none of that is happening.

2. Dune Part Two is said to be more of an epic action/romance story compared to the first film and I am really intrigue to see how Zimmer take his Dune soundscape and adjust to the new storytelling elements. Are we going to hear more bagpipes? Will there be a love theme? Will there be epic choir? Will the abstract elements be composed in a different manner? I think naturally there is a lot of intrigue due to this being a follow-up but also one that takes the franchise to a slightly different direction.

As someone who really liked the first one, been eagerly anticipating what Zimmer & Co. will do for Part 2. Hoping they'll take advantage of the more EPIC aspects of the second film (based on the trailers) and deliver the goods.

Oh, and now I'm reminded that we *should* have already gotten this movie and score by now.

Pardon me while I go rant at someone about the actor's strike and all that....

I'm also cautiously looking forward to it. The first score was at least interesting, even if it wasn't particularly accessible. Personally, I actually enjoyed the Dune Sketchbook album more than the actually film score album. The first three tracks in particular on the Sketchbook really held my interest, and I was kinda disappointed that the actual film score itself didn't use those elements (like the bagpipe Atreides theme) more prominently.

Also, like you have pointed out, Zimmer and Co have a pretty decent track record of sequels scores expanding significantly on the predecessor, and of not just being rehashes. So, yeah, I'm quite curious to see what Zimmer and the Zimmlings produce for round 2.

None of these is a bad reason. I wouldn't say I'm looking forward to it, but hearing Zimmer's music in the trailers did get me a little amped. Some of that is just excitement that we're actually getting Part 2, but also yeah, the music has had time to grow on me just a little.

Honestly, I liked the first one and I’m likewise looking forward to the second. As Reznor/Ross just demonstrated (and Krilc earlier this year) the bar is set a lot lower than a guilty pleasure modern Zimmer score.

I was disappointed with Dune 1, but I do not blame Zimmer, but instead Villeneuve whose aural aesthetic I have never liked. (I do love his visual aesthetic). I do not harbor any hope that Dune 2 will be any better.

All the best

I'm actually with you on this one. Not that I *love* the first one, but I understand the approach Zimmer took and apprechiate large chunks of it, as I do dig the overall vibes of the Score and honestly really like many of the sounds and motifs. Plus, it has become an inseperable part of the overall fabric of the entire project for me and I can't imagine it with anything else by this point.

Really looking forward to the Score for Part 2 and I hope Zimmer gets to expand upon the more thematic ideas.

I could be wrong...and I HOPE I'm wrong...

...but I think it'll sound exactly the same as the first one, and that means I'll hate it.
