This one kind of slipped under the radar - and perhaps Kiner’s other super-long albums for a galaxy far, far away served as a deterrent for others. But it’s still a blast to have the music from the back half of Disney’s generally terrific animated series finally available for standalone listening - the seasons where Kiner & co. really started to deepen the melodic roster and occasionally had an orchestral budget to hit some pretty tremendous heights. The "cut and paste" feel of the earlier seasons' scores is also substantially diminished.

Praise in particular is owed to the series finale, and especially the final four tracks (Purrgil Arrive, Detonate the Dome, Ezra’s Message, and Epilogue and End Credits) which deliver terrific variations on new themes and old (Ezra’s, Sabine’s, Hera’s, the Force) plus a marvelous contrapuntal performance of the series theme against the saga’s title theme. Seriously, that quartet of cues represents some of the finest music for the saga this century.

**** for both.

Ever since I watched the show on D+ as a teenager, I’ve been eagerly anticipating these final scores in the lineup. Very very happy that they’ve arrived! Perhaps a hot take, but I would place the Thrawn theme as the best non-Williams villain theme in the franchise (if you want to count Enfys Nest as a villain, that would be the close second).

An obligatory reminder of just how good Giacchino can be when doing a brass driven evil theme, haha! Yup, it’s absolutely spectacular in its own right too. I’m just a sucker for organs.
