Dune 3 is the easy joke, though since I already made that joke for two 2024 scores perhaps Dune 5 is the right term - not because it recalls Arrakis in a specific way but because the music seems focused on maintaining its own kind of raw atmosphere. That’s probably appropriate for the concept, and goodness knows something like Elmer Bernstein’s Hawaii wouldn’t have fit the show, but nonetheless you’ve heard this methodology before.

Or rather it’s 95% that and 5% Soul Surfer as the two scores adapt traditional native chants from the islands. If you want to hear Beltrami’s shark attack material in a more noble guise, you’ve come to the right place.

Dune goes Hawaiian!

> Dune goes Hawaiian!

I'm nearing the end of the album, and while I enjoyed the beginning of it, it does get repetitive. It has bits of The Last Samurai and Tears of the Sun, and all of those films about faraway lands that Zimmer has scored. I really like the vocal elements, but the album gets bogged down in mind-numbing cues that are only there to sustain the atmosphere.

A tight 35-minute album would have really shone, but this is too long.

That's practically my bumper sticker of life, lately.

That actually sounds pretty darn interesting to me lol. But are there bagpipe anthems? wink

Interesting that he's been doing so much TV assignments lately (or at least his credit showing up there); I know he's worked in that genre before, but it feels like the 2020s have seen a lot of those for him. Goes to show how prestigious streaming is now?

Yeah, probably since 2016 with The Crown and Planet Earth II - earlier once you include video games (this is all the fault of Modern Warfare 2 in an indirect way).

With a lot of these TV albums, there has been an increasing tendency in the streaming era to put his name on albums (and tracks) even if he only came up with the title theme and otherwise sat in more of a producer role. I sincerely doubt he wrote much if any of the episodic score for The Americas or Prehistoric Planet Season 2 or Around the World in 80 Days or the like, but at the same time you do have to wonder how many listeners would be directed to those albums if his name wasn't on them.

Apple TV has been making some great prestigious shows no doubt.

I watched the first episode of Chief of War and really enjoyed it. I thought the music was just good on album but I get the music more now that I know the tone and characters of the show.

Just got the show to watch and will be doing an interview in two weeks. Feel free to share question ideas (whoever's reading this)!

How much does modern music production technology end up competing with historical accuracy when you approach a project like this in 2025? Meaning, to what degree do you try to acknowledge the music of that time period vs. have to give a modern audience the kind of music they expect from television?

Probably both given consideration. The latter for sure. Honestly, the former, I personally think it shouldn't matter. The criticism never works the other way around. I like Ready Player One for example, but it bothers me to no end that Silvestri didn't even attempt to make the music sound futuristic, or video game like.

This actually sounds interesting. Funny side note is that I watched Black Gold for the first time a few weeks back and relistened to Horner's score, and I was surprised by how much I found parts reminding me of Zimmer's Dune score (probably the desert setting played a role in that too). It did have me wonder what a Horner Dune score would have sounded like.

Horner trying to work within Villeneuve's aesthetic preferences (confines?) sounds like pure comedy, although given that he had Apocalypto on his resume perhaps he may have succeeded.

Was Black Gold (the film) any good? It seems kinda obscure.

Not really, it was obscure for a reason and barely got a release in the US. Not to mention some questionable casting choices. Yes, we've already seen Antonio Banderas plan someone from the Middle East in 13th Warrior, but it still doesn't mean it was the right choice here. Same goes for Mark Strong, an even more baffling choice.
