1) Anyone got some 'flew under the radar' movie recommendations for this year? For the third year in a row I'm looking at just the saddest list of favourite movies - only one weak 4.5/5 (Spiderverse), five weak 4/5's (Blackberry, Dungeons and Dragons, TMNT, John Wick, and Barbie) and two flawed 3.5/5's I'm unsure of when I'll watch again (Covenant and Cobweb). And that's about it. Makes my heart sad. Any rec's?

2) In case anyone missed Broxton's rundown post - Road to Boston now confirmed as 'score of the year material'. I don't care if it's just from one major reviewer and if it eventually slips down to his #19th of the year, I'm still counting that as a big shit yes. Giver another listen folks!

3) Don't sleep on Lessons in Chemistry. It's lovely.

4) I watched Bram Stoker's Dracula again last night and sweet Jesus...what a score. Crazy to hear something so operatic and romantic in a bloody as hell horror movie where Gary Oldman feeds a baby to a topless Monica Belluci. I miss Kilar...

5) Anyone planning on Killers of a Flower Moon this weekend? I wish I could see it opening weekend but probably can't hit it up in theatres until...ugh, maybe never. So excited though. Also, any word on the score? All I've read so far is that it was propulsive and kept the suspense/tension going.

6) For anyone who likes techno/funky music in their scores, Ion Fury: Aftershock by Jarrko Rotsen is a fun time so far. Basically just sounds like an abandoned Daft Punk album...which sounds like a compusult, but I meant it as a compliment.

7) Does anyone else doom-scroll Reddit political pages while on the pooper and get really worried and depressed about the state of the world, or is that just me?

8) My 90s movie book is almost ready to be available in stores, which is exciting but sweet Jesus do you get butt fucked when you self-publish. I went through Friessen Press and now, 3000 bucks later, I find out I'll make around 5 buck royalty per book. They say self-published books usually average around 250 sales so...yeah, if that's the case, I won't even make back half the money me and my folks invested in it. Considering how horribly broke I am, that's a really big bummer. Anyways, long story short - support my broke ass and buy a copy once it's available haha. And you'll know it, cause I'm gonna be shamelessly plugging it all over the place.

9) On that note, does anyone have any experience with publishing/literary agents? I'd much rather try and bash my head against the wall for a couple years getting my next book properly published than go through this crap again (a 5 dollar royalty ain't bad when they pay all the upfront fees, but after blowing 3 grand, I feel ripped).

10) Ironically, they literally JUST sent me an email saying the book has just been announced on their Coming Soon page. So I guess I'm happy...just, y'know, STILL BROKE! :P

11) Let's end this on a weird number just to annoy the OCD among us.

I never have "under the radar" recs, but did you see the new Mission Impossible?

Alright alright I'll get to it again. As with all the other stuff you keep insisting is fantastic.

I'm not as enamored as you are, but it is lovely. Will need another listen. Really enjoyed the book so I'm excited to check out the show at some point.

Counterpoint: that's exactly the kind of borderline campy horror scenario I'd expect sweeping melodrama.

Ah shoot, didn't realize that was this weekend. I don't think I've ever seen a Scorsese film in theaters... Also, 3.5 hours.

Noted.

Doomscroll filmtracks instead and read about everyone lamenting the loss of memorable themes.

Yikes, that sounds very much like the opposite of what you were hoping for with the self-publishing route, I'm sorry. But hey, excited the book will be available soon!

> 11) Let's end this on a weird number just to annoy the OCD among us.

Like that's ever bothered me when I post numbered thoughts.

This should probably get its own post, but

12) Slotherhouse by Sam Ewing is a delight. The movie's plot looks extremely dumb (cute killer sloth terrorizes a sorority house) and I have no idea why Ewing decided to go with horror riffing on The Mission, of all scores, but it works very well.

Yeah, it's been super slim pickin's this year. I've actually watched way more TV than I have movies this year, so I can give you some recs there, but in terms of movies, my favorites outside the ones you mentioned are: Oppenheimer, Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning 1, The Flash, Renfield, Elemental, and the new French Three Musketeers film.

There's been a TON of really good TV though: final season of Succession, Fall of the House of Usher, The Last of Us, Silo, S2 of The Bear, Beef, Ted Lasso, Shrinking, The Night Agent, The Crowded Room, S3 of Only Murders in the Building, S2 of Perry Mason. All highly recommended.

I'm so happy how happy this made you big grin

Me too. I adore that score, and its one my my favorite horror movies of all time too,

I just got the score today. Going to listen later.

Flying very under the radar: Tetris! Tons of fun.

Not flying under the radar: Oppenheimer.

Whether you want to explore You Hurt My Feelings right now perhaps depends on whether you want to see a film about an author so close to your publishing struggles.

Yes. Not a bad way to occupy 3-4 hours while my wife and her friends are at the Taylor Swift concert film.

I watched Sisu last night and I enjoyed it much more than I expected. Basically a John Wick/Inglorious Bastards hybrid that runs a lean 90 minutes. Not going to win any awards but worth checking out.

Last Voyage of the Demeter was entertaining but predictable, and at least an interesting take spin on vampire films.

Elemental might not reach the high points of Pixar's best work but was solid and the best original animated film of the year so far. But if I recall you aren't a Pixar fan.

I only sleep IN lessons in chemistry, at least when I took it in high school.

I really should watch this again at some point.

Hopefully Sunday night since I'm traveling Friday and Saturday. I am curious to hear the score since it's been a while a Scorsese film gave us a decent score. It's a shame he didn't continue to work with Howard Shore this past decade.

It obviously didn't flew under the radar but I really loved Oppenheimer, definitely a 5* film for me. I also really enjoyed Air.

Never even heard of it. Should I be ashamed?

Oh man, that movie is bonkers. I actually saw it my mother in the cinema when I was 11. Definitely an awkward watch at times :p But it's definitely a film that's high on my list of rewatchable films!

Probably see it next week with a mate. Listening to the score now, quite like it!

Sounds good, will check it out!

I do spend to much time on Reddit but I tend to ignore the political pages. But even more regular pages can make me worried and depressed about the state of the world.

Oh, that sounds really interesting! Once published I'll definitely check it out (so you've already earned to first $5 :p)

Actually 11 is a perfectly fine number to end this one, it probably would've annoyed me more if you ended on 12 or 13 :p

Koreeda's new film Monster is really good. Though I guess you'd end up watching that at some point anyway.
