I love how that bolero-march tune builds into a furious action piece. And the amount of noise the brass and percussion make will blow you, and the neighbors down the street away.

The final two to three minutes of this symphony is also pretty awesome!

I've heard a couple of recordings of this symphony but Leonard Bernstein's recording with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (DG) is the one I come back to the most.

That is all.

Bernstein's recording with the CSO is excellent, although my heart goes to the more recent recording of Andris Nelsons with the Boston Symphony. In fact, his cycle with the BSO is one of the best ones in recent memory, IMO.

I've heard Andris Nelson's 5th, 8th, 9th, and 10th and those recordings are fantastic. I should check out the rest of his cycle! Thanks!

I've been making my way through Vasily Petrenko's cycle with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra recently and those recordings are wonderful too!

Yup. That's the best recording, and my god will I never get tired of that first movement. No piece of classical music has ever reached that level of full-throated, relentless fury.
