I didn't see Riley post this, so I'm taking over this week.

This was a great year for scores, including my all time favorite. Here's my top 10 for 1993:

1. Jurassic Park
2. Rudy
3. Free Willy
4. Schindler's List
5. The Nightmare Before Christmas
6. Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey
7. Cliffhanger
8. Tombstone
9. Hocus Pocus
10. The Three Musketeers

What are your favorite scores for 1993?

I would like to point out that you listed thirty-nine scores without mentioning Schindler's List, so either you haven't heard it or you really hate it. So now I'm curious which it is haha

I offer the following:

Jurassic Park (John Williams)
Once Upon a Forest (James Horner)
Schindler's List (John Williams)
Sommersby (Danny Elfman)
Call of the Wild (Lee Holdridge)
The Adventures of Huck Finn (Bill Conti)
Rudy (Jerry Goldsmith)
The Three Muskateers (Michael Kamen)
We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story (James Horner)
Tombstone (Bruce Broughton)

Runners Up: The Man Without a Face, Much Ado About Nothing, Needful Things, Searching for Bobby Fischer

I definitely need to explore more scores from the 90s as I have 219 in my collections

Astonishing year. One of the best ever. Making a Top 10 is nearly impossible, but after much thought I went with:

1. SCHINDLER'S LIST, Williams
2. JURASSIC PARK, Williams
3. RUDY, Goldsmith
4. TIM BURTON'S THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS, Elfman
5. SOMMERSBY, Elfman
6. MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING, Doyle
7. TOMBSTONE, Broughton
8. THE PIANO, Nyman
9. HEAVEN & EARTH, Kitaro
10. M. BUTTERFLY, Shore

Plus Horner's astonishing output: BOPHA!, A FAR OFF PLACE, HOUSE OF CARDS, JACK THE BEAR, THE MAN WITHOUT A FACE, ONCE UPON A FOREST, THE PELICAN BRIEF, SEARCHING FOR BOBBY FISCHER, SWING KIDS, and WE'RE BACK! - A DINOSAUR'S STORY.

Honorable mentions: MY LIFE (Barry), RICH IN LOVE (Delerue), NEEDFUL THINGS (Doyle), DRAGON: THE BRUCE LEE STORY (Edelman), GETTYSBURG (Edelman), DEMOLITION MAN (Goldenthal), DAVE (Howard), THE FUGITIVE (Howard), CLIFFHANGER (Jones), THREE MUSKETEERS (Kamen), KÖNIG DER LETZTEN TAGE (KIlar), ETHAN FROME (Portman), THE JOY LUCK CLUB (Portman), LITTLE BUDDHA (Sakamoto), BATMAN: MASK OF THE PHANTASM (Walker), THE DARK HALF (Young), FAREWELL MY CONCUBINE (Zhao), RED FIRECRACKER GREEN FIRECRACKER (Zhao), COOL RUNNINGS (Zimmer), THE HOUSE OF THE SPIRITS (Zimmer).

Okay, have to ask: No Age of Innocence because you hate it, or just so many good scores that you forgot to list it?

Neither. I tried to limit my choices to the Top 30 of the year. The Age of Innocence would come in somewhere around 40th. Bear in mind that I have 246 scores from 1993, so that's still pretty good!

Thanks champ! Been just a crazy couple of days and wasn't able to hop on it, glad you did (although I have a sneaky suspicion it wasn't hard for you to rank Jurassic Park as #1 for any list haha). Also look, your favourite score of all time came out the same year as mine! Huzzah!

Anyhoo, my list would probs be...

1. The Piano
2. Rudy
3. Schindler's List
4. Jurassic Park
5. Free Willy
6. Indecent Proposal
7. Sommersby
8. Age of Innocence
9. Searching for Bobby Fischer
10. Batman: Mask of the Phantasm

And the excellent runner ups in no particular order:

Gettysburg
Homeward Bound
Cliffhanger
Cool Runnings
Dennis the Menace
The Fugitive
Hocus Pocus
The Man Without a Face
My Neighbour Totoro
Needful Things
Once Upon a Forest
Pelican Brief
The Secret Garden
Three Colours: Blue
Tombstone
True Romance

Looking at that list, I wanna go back to the happens-five-times-a-year argument about how scores aren't as good as they used to be. And I remember how often everyone says "shut up Riley, there's SO many great scores every single year!"

But I look at that list, where 5 scores are all time top 70 or 80 albums ever made, and the other five are all better than anything I've heard in at least the past couple years, and the runner up category consists of some absolutely wonderful stuff I could happily pop in at any moment, I gotta once again say....

....things just might not be as good as they used to be. Like, for real.

Boom. Sour Riley, out!

I see a typo of your own. Not to get all up in arms about Age of Innocence, I don't want to act like it's the greatest score ever, but 8th is a little low, despite how good Sommersby is.

It's funny how the greatest scores of all time were written either when you were a teenager or for the films you watched when you were a teenager.

> ....things just might not be as good as they used to be. Like, for real.

Okay, now you've done it. Going to go waste my time on a new project and come back here to either destroy your point or accidentally validate it!

Any other year it would be higher. But '93 was just a MONSTER.

I'm sure that has absolutely nothing to do with it.

.....

Ok, granted. BUT LOOK AT THAT LIST!!! Even crabby bastards born in the '50s couldn't have possibly complained back then!

I anxiously await at least SOMEONE to try and destroy my agrument. When I posted it I actually started going back to delete it right away, cause 2020 really did ruin my ability to be critical and snarky, but then I also thought....nah, it's been a long time since we had a little tussle around here.

Man, we did a whole thread a while back where one guy hyped up Stargate by saying "It's a return to the glory days of Star Wars!" Everyone finds a way to be crabby. Or at least backhanded in their compliments.

It's a pretty benign thing to start an argument about, it's fine. We'll probably look back on 2020 as just a weird year music-wise.

The best Star Wars score is 2008's The Clone Wars.

Terraforming from Man of Steel is the best track of any superhero film.

John Powell's best score is Rio 2.

Danny Elfman's carpet matches the drapes.

There. "Benign" THAT shit! ARGUMENTS AWAAAAAYYYYYY

No problem. The past few weeks at work had been really busy for me too and yesterday I had a nice break, so couldn't resist.

I always keep meaning to get The Piano, and yet always pass it by for something else. I don't know why, because I really like it in the film when I watched it.

Not just that, but also the argument is that "there are plenty of great scores outside of Hollywood movies", which is true, but how can Hollywood make more movies, yet the collective output still not measure up.

You definitely need to get it then, because the irony of it being my favourite film score is that it's not actually used very well in the film itself, where it's chopped up and the same bits keep repeating and it's actually quite annoying. As a film music album, though, it's superb, even with the oddball ordering of tracks 4-6.

Yeah, especially since I started going through a bunch of now-forgotten indie movies of the 90's for my book, I can definitely declare that indie music has hugely improved in quality since then (SO many cheap synth's and corny saxophones....). But the major Hollywood output has fallen extensively and depressingly.

Doesn't help that back in '93, giants like Williams, Horner, and Goldsmith all had multiple scores to chew on. Totally get that. But I mean....where's our NEW Williams, Horner, and Goldsmith...?

So great a year that you even stole a Hisaishi score from 1988 to bulk it out...

As usual with these nineties list challenges, I've heard enough to be happy with a top five, but not really a top ten. All I'm gonna say is that I'm surprised more people don't love 'Heaven and Earth' - honestly, one of the best of the decade for me, and an easy third best of the year (I've actually listened to it far more than Jurassic Park, as an album, so I'm tempted to even say second-best of the year).
