Buy it... for a predictable and adequate but not strategically distinctive continuation of the same general sound from the preceding score, with greater emphasis on manipulated action conventions.

Avoid it... if you were attracted to Anthony Willis' prior music because of its suspenseful thematic evolution and remarkable passages of singing from the titular character, none of which survives in the sequel.

M3GAN 2.0: (Chris Bacon) The whole enticement with 2023's horror comedy M3GAN involved the concept of a killer doll with artificial intelligence causing havoc in a perfectly nice suburban environment. And, of course, the doll sang lullabies. All that personality was thrown out the window when the filmmakers missed the mark with the 2025 sequel, M3GAN 2.0. Although the precocious little brat of a doll had been defeated, it copied itself into other devices in the family' home, allowing it to resume its role in the sequel. But instead of terrorizing people, its mission is now to stop an even more malevolent artificial intelligence from taking over the planet with the help of humans who need to get laid more often. Thus, despite the sequel bringing back all the principal actors, you get a knock-off of The Terminator with crappy action and none of the intrigue inherent in the doll's origins. And, of course, the horror element is simply gone. Reactions to M3GAN 2.0 were understandably muted, a "what the hell did they do with this franchise?" feeling emerging from critics and audiences. The score for M3GAN by Anthony Willis was adequate but not particularly remarkable if not for the two short snippets of singing that the composer brought into the equation. That sick homage to Walt Disney innocence was a striking breathe of fresh air in the concept, one that could have fueled an outright musical with the dangerous doll. But, alas, no. Not only did Willis not return for the sequel, but neither did any kind of singing by the titular character this time, a huge disappointment. Instead, you receive a standard suspense and action score by Chris Bacon, formerly of the more amusing screen credit of "Chris P. Bacon." His solo career has, to this point, been defined by television series, though he was long a ghostwriter for James Newton Howard and Danny Elfman on major Hollywood films. Bacon provides competent music that's similar enough to the prior score to suffice, and he even carries over Willis' main theme for the doll in a few choice places. With the singing gone, though, and the horror and fantasy elements largely supplanted by more basic action ones, there's a touch of originality that is lost in the equation.
