I wonder how Basil Poledouris or Jerry Goldsmith would have handled it

This score may not have the most complex orchestrations but it's hella effective, I doubt Basil Poledouris could have written as effective a score, my problem with Poledouris' music is that he favoured brawn over genuine emotion, he would hit you over the head with his often overblown fanfares, maybe Jerry Goldsmith would have written something close to this in style and emotion, especially since Jerry like John Barry was writing music that was simple but effective by the 90s, John Barry effectively blends his own pondering melodramatic style with that of Aaron Copland's sweeping Americana style. I completely agree with your assertion that John Barry couldn't have written effective native American music and I agree, his style is very distinct and it's what he's comfortable with and ultimately is so effective it doesn't need any ethnic music on top. Overall this is tied with Out of Africa as my favourite John Barry scores. He's definitely my 3rd favourite film composer of the Silver and Bronze Age.
