I guess I must have a soft spot for this score... I agree with your review, but there wasn't much by way of pointing out the good in the review.
"The Hunt" is an interesting cue, but I actually don't believe the main theme is stated. There is a different theme there, possibly an up-tempo variation on the main theme, but a different melody all together. The construct of it actually sounds similar to "Flag Parade" from Phantom Menace, sort of an extended march. Is this what you meant?
Despite the film's "I can't believe I'm watching this schlock" feel at the San Diego portions, "Visitor in San Diego" actually has some very wild, frantic orchestrations and in my opinion, it's one of Williams' more complex and enjoyable action cues, along the lines of "The Ultimate War" from Hook. The transfer into the jungle rhythm about 3/4 way into the cue is a great moment. "Rescuing Sarah" is highly percussive, but some great crescendos are reached and it's I think it's exciting to hear John Williams reach into this brutal sound that he rarely goes for.
I agree with your rating of 3 stars, I just think you sounded a tad on the negative side. Yes, it's a disappointment due to it's departure from the original spirit (and material) of Jurassic Park, but John Williams on a mediocre day is ten times better than most others on a good one.
