Mundane? We must've seen 2 different movies. Zimmer's score is incredibly creepy and effective, while also creating a sense of general melancholy and sadness at times. This blend of dark emotion is difficult to evoke with film music, especially to this degree, but he does it brilliantly. Other, more intense motifs create a great sense of dread. This is the complete package for a horror score - even better than greats like Psycho and The Sixth Sense. Few composers could have matched the mystery, tragedy and sheer horror of Rachel and Samara's story the way Zimmer did, and he did it largely using just strings and piano.
